Anyone can write a story. Two things are hard to fake: (a) information that predates the event it describes (so it can’t be written after the fact), and (b) a claim anchored to a concrete, public, physical reality the author didn’t control — a real place, a real death, a real date. Where Scripture does both at once, the “lucky guess / wrote-it-later” explanations run out. That is exactly where the prophecy thread lives.
| Prophecy (pre-Jesus) | What it says → what it landed on | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Isaiah 53 8th–6th c. BC; DSS c.125 BC | A servant “pierced for our transgressions,” “as a lamb to the slaughter” (silent), “with the rich in his death” → crucified, silent before Pilate, buried in Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb. | Strong |
| Psalm 22 pre-exilic; DSS pre-Christian | “They pierced my hands and my feet… they part my garments… cast lots… all my bones are out of joint” → the exact picture of a Roman crucifixion written before crucifixion was a Roman method. | Strong |
| Daniel 9:24–27 trad. 6th c.; critical 165 BC | “Seventy weeks” (490 yrs); Messiah “cut off” before the city & sanctuary are destroyed → a Messiah killed before AD 70 — a real, datable window Jesus fits and no later claimant can. | Model |
| Micah 5:2 8th c. BC | The ruler comes from Bethlehem — a real, named, tiny town, ~700 yrs early. | Strong |
| Zechariah 11:12–13 6th–5th c. BC | Thirty pieces of silver, thrown “to the potter” in the house of the LORD → Judas’ exact price → the potter’s field (Matt 27). A real sum, a real field. | Model |
| Zech 9:9 · 12:10 6th–5th c. BC | The king comes “riding on a donkey” (Palm Sunday); “they shall look on me whom they have pierced” (the spear, John 19:34,37). | Model |
These are the strongest patterns because they aren’t just literary — they’re nailed to concrete reality.
| Written detail (centuries early) | The physical anchor it hit |
|---|---|
| Bethlehem (Micah 5:2) — “house of bread” | A real town on the map; and the child born there calls himself the Bread of Life. Place-name + theme locked together. |
| Pierced hands & feet (Ps 22:16) | A method of death (crucifixion) not yet invented in Israel when written. |
| “Not a bone broken” (Ex 12:46; Ps 34:20) | The soldiers, finding him already dead, did not break his legs (John 19:33–36) — a battlefield contingency. |
| “With the rich in his death” (Isa 53:9) | Buried in the rock tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy man. |
| 30 pieces of silver → the potter (Zech 11) | The exact betrayal price; returned, used to buy a potter’s field (Matt 27:3–10). |
| Pierced side (Zech 12:10) | The spear-thrust; “blood and water” (John 19:34). |
| The timing window (Dan 9) | Messiah cut off before the Temple’s AD 70 destruction — a door that has since closed. |
| Passage | Hebrew & what it says | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Zechariah 12:10 | daqar (thrust through): “they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and mourn… as for an only son” → John 19:37; Rev 1:7. | Strong |
| Psalm 22:16 | ka’aru: “they pierced my hands and my feet.” The Masoretic text reads “like a lion,” but the Septuagint and a Dead Sea Scroll (5/6ḤevPs) support “pierced” — the older reading. | Strong |
| Isaiah 53:5 | mĕcholal (pierced through): “he was pierced for our transgressions” (KJV “wounded”); v10 “it pleased the LORD to bruise him.” | Strong |
| Zechariah 13:7 | “Smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered” → quoted by Jesus the night of his arrest (Matt 26:31). | Model |
| Zechariah 13:6 | “What are these wounds in thine hands?” Traditional “wounded shepherd” reading — but the context is partly about false prophets. | Debated |
| Daniel 9:26 | karat: “Messiah shall be cut off” — killed, before the AD 70 destruction. | Model |
The wider passion cluster: garments parted & lots cast (Ps 22:18) · “why hast thou forsaken me” (Ps 22:1) · gall & vinegar (Ps 69:21) · back to the smiters, spitting (Isa 50:6) · marred visage (Isa 52:14) · silent as a lamb (Isa 53:7) · buried with the rich (Isa 53:9) · numbered with transgressors (Isa 53:12) · not a bone broken (Ps 34:20; Ex 12:46). NT piercing: the spear in the side (John 19:34), Thomas & the nail-prints (John 20:25–27), “they also which pierced him” (Rev 1:7).
A dense web of type → fulfilment. Real, deliberate literary architecture. Honest grade: Model — masterful design; whether it is divine authorship or the authors’ intertextual artistry is the interpretive question.
| Pattern | Old Testament type → Jesus |
|---|---|
| 40 — testing | Flood 40 days · Israel 40 yrs in the wilderness · Moses 40 days on Sinai → Jesus 40 days tempted in the wilderness (Matt 4). |
| Bread | Manna in the desert → Jesus multiplies bread & “I am the bread of life” (John 6); born in Beth-lehem (“house of bread”). |
| Passover lamb | Ex 12 — a spotless lamb slain, blood saves, no bone broken → “Christ our Passover” (1 Cor 5:7), killed at Passover. |
| The bronze serpent | Num 21 — lifted on a pole; look and live → “so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:14). |
| Jonah — 3 days | 3 days in the fish → 3 days in the tomb: “the sign of Jonah” (Matt 12:40). |
| Isaac on Moriah | Gen 22 — the beloved son carries the wood up the mountain; a substitute ram; “God will provide” → the Cross, in the Moriah region. |
| Joseph | Beloved son, betrayed by his brothers for silver, suffers unjustly, is exalted, and saves those who betrayed him. |
| New Adam | A garden of disobedience (Eden) → a garden of obedience (Gethsemane); death by one man, life by one (Rom 5). |
| New Moses | The deliverer who gives the law from a mountain (Sermon on the Mount) and masters the sea. |
| Melchizedek | Gen 14 — a king-priest with bread and wine → the eternal priest (Heb 7); bread & wine at the Supper. |
| Day of Atonement | Lev 16 — sin laid on a substitute, sent away → “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” |
| The torn veil / one sacrifice | The Temple system of endless blood → “It is finished”; the veil tears top-to-bottom (Matt 27:51). |
| Death by a tree → life by a tree | Eden’s tree → the Cross; “cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree” (Deut 21:23; Gal 3:13). |
| Firstborn / firstfruits | Passover’s spared firstborn → “the firstborn from the dead,” “the firstfruits” (Col 1:18; 1 Cor 15:20). |
| Thread | The argument | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Fullness of time | The message broke out at a uniquely optimal moment: one empire (Pax Romana), one trade-language (Koine Greek), Roman roads, synagogues seeded across the diaspora, live messianic expectation. “When the fullness of the time was come” (Gal 4:4). | Model |
| Cosmic fine-tuning & the origin of life | The constants sit on a razor’s edge for life; the leap from chemistry to a self-replicating, information-bearing cell is unexplained. Reads like engineering. (Counter: the multiverse.) | Model |
| Consciousness, NDEs & moral law | The “hard problem” of subjective experience resists physical reduction; veridical near-death reports; and a moral law that presses on us as real. Points beyond matter. (The quantum-consciousness link stays Speculative.) | Speculative |
| Efficacy & transformed lives | Documented, medically-examined recoveries; the measurable power of the faith to remake lives and cultures. But honest: controlled intercessory-prayer trials are mixed to null (the STEP study). Take the real cases; don’t overclaim the studies. | Mixed |
