Patterns Like the Crimson Worm

The crimson worm of Psalm 22 is not a one-off. Scripture is laced with details — single words, insect biology, plant names, census numbers, feast dates, whole life-stories — that fold a later reality into an earlier text. This is a curated, honestly-graded catalog of the best of them. Each carries a verdict badge; the ones that don't survive scrutiny are kept in and marked Refuted, because an honest case names its own weak material.

Part I (below) is the classic set. Part II gathers what the big Christian-video teachers are actually teaching right now — BibleProject, Michael Heiser, Testify's undesigned coincidences, Chuck Missler, the Star-of-Bethlehem film, Jonathan Cahn — each attributed to who popularized it and graded the same way.

Established Model Speculative Refuted / Folklore Established = the text/fact plainly says it · Model = a real pattern that illuminates shape, not proof · Speculative = intriguing, don't build on it · Refuted = popular but fails the test.
The anchor, in one line. Psalm 22:6 — "But I am a worm (תּוֹלַעַת tôlaʿaṯ), and no man." The word isn't the generic worm (rimmah); it names the scarlet-dye insect Coccus ilicis. To give birth the mother fixes herself permanently to a tree / wood, forms a crimson shell, dies secreting a scarlet dye that stains the wood and her young — and about the third day the dead body dries and turns white, flaking off like wax or snow. A worm fixed to wood, pouring out scarlet, dying so its young may live, white on the third day — written a thousand years before a Roman cross. That is the shape every pattern below shares.
Tier 1 — A world hidden in a single word or objectThe closest relatives of the crimson worm: biology, botany, and lexicon doing prophetic work.
1

The Crimson Worm — תּוֹלַעַת tôlaʿaṯ

Psalm 22:6 · Isaiah 1:18 · Exodus 26:1 (scarlet of the Tabernacle)

The scarlet of the Tabernacle and of atonement imagery is this same worm: "though your sins be as scarlet (tôlaʿaṯ-dye, shani), they shall be white as snow" (Isaiah 1:18) — crimson becoming white is the worm's own life-cycle and the whole logic of substitution in four Hebrew words.

Why it's remarkable: the natural history of Coccus ilicis was not known to be a "type" by the psalmist; it is simply the accurate word for the scarlet insect. The crucifixion-shaped reading only becomes visible after the cross — which is exactly what a planted foreshadowing looks like.

VerdictEstablished (the word + biology) Model (the typological reading)
2

The Almond — שָׁקֵד shaqed, "the watcher"

Jeremiah 1:11–12 · Numbers 17:8 · Exodus 25:33–34

"I see a rod of an almond tree (shaqed). Then said the LORD... for I will hasten (shoqed) my word to perform it."Jeremiah 1:11–12

A deliberate pun: shaqed (almond) and shoqed (watching / hastening) are one keystroke apart. The almond is the first tree to bloom in the Holy Land — the "awake," watchful tree — so God's word "wakes early" to fulfill itself. The theme recurs: Aaron's dead rod buds almonds overnight (Numbers 17), a resurrection-sign choosing God's priesthood out of death; and the lampstand's cups were shaped as almond blossoms (Exodus 25).

Why it's remarkable: the word for a tree carries the doctrine — God is the one who stays awake over His word. A dead staff producing living fruit prefigures a priesthood vindicated by resurrection.
VerdictEstablished (the wordplay) Model (resurrection/priesthood typology)
3

Pitch = Atonement — כֹּפֶר kopher

Genesis 6:14 · cf. kaphar / kippur (Leviticus 16; "Yom Kippur")

"Make thee an ark of gopher wood... and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch (kopher)."Genesis 6:14

The waterproof covering that carries Noah's family safely through the waters of judgment is named with the very root — k-p-r — that the Law uses for atonement: kaphar (to cover), kapporet (the mercy seat), kippur (Day of Atonement). The ark is saved by being "covered."

Why it's remarkable: the physical thing that saves (a covering that keeps judgment out) is lexically identical to the theological thing that saves. The Bible's first picture of salvation is literally "covered in atonement, inside and out."
VerdictEstablished (lexical fact) Model (the typology)
4

Hyssop — the one plant that runs from Egypt to the cross

Exodus 12:22 · Numbers 19:18 · Psalm 51:7 · John 19:29

A single humble herb threads the entire sacrificial system. The Passover blood is applied to the doorposts with hyssop (Exodus 12:22); the red-heifer purification sprinkles with hyssop (Numbers 19); David prays "purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean" (Psalm 51:7); and at Golgotha the sponge of sour wine is lifted to Jesus on hyssop (John 19:29).

Why it's remarkable: the plant used to apply the blood that saved Israel on the first Passover is the plant that touches the lips of the true Passover Lamb as He dies. The thread is unbroken and almost certainly deliberate in John.
VerdictEstablished (a real textual thread across both Testaments)
Tier 2 — Numbers, timing & geometry that line up when they shouldn'tChronology, census counts, feast dates and gematria.
5

Methuselah — "when he dies, it shall come"

Genesis 5:21–27 · the Flood chronology

Methuselah (מְתוּשֶׁלַח) can be read mûth (death) + shelach (to send / bring) — "his death shall bring it." He lived 969 years, the longest life in all Scripture. Run the Genesis 5 chronology and he dies in the very year of the Flood. The man whose name announced the coming judgment was kept alive longer than anyone who ever lived.

Why it's remarkable: the longest human lifespan in the Bible becomes a measurement of God's patience — judgment held back as long as Methuselah drew breath. The name and the chronology point at the same event.
VerdictModel — the etymology is genuinely debated (also read "man of the dart"); the chronology holds on the Masoretic numbers.
6

The scarlet thread that stopped turning white

Babylonian Talmud, Yoma 39b · Jerusalem Talmud, Yoma 6:3 · Isaiah 1:18

On the Day of Atonement a scarlet cord was tied in the Temple; tradition held it turned white when the sacrifice was accepted — "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow." The Talmud itself records that for the last forty years before the Second Temple's destruction (so, from roughly AD 30) the scarlet thread stopped turning white, and other Temple signs failed in the same window.

Why it's remarkable: this is the rabbis' own testimony, not a Christian claim — that the Temple's atonement-sign went dark beginning in the exact generation of the crucifixion (~AD 30), forty years before the Temple fell in AD 70.
VerdictEstablished (the Talmudic record is real) Model (the dating-to-the-cross inference)
7

The camp of Israel laid out as a cross

Numbers 2 (the census) · Numbers 24:5–6 (Balaam's view)

The twelve tribes camped on four sides of the Tabernacle with recorded troop counts: Judah-group east 186,400; Reuben-group south 151,450; Ephraim-group west 108,100; Dan-group north 157,600. The longer north–south axis and shorter east–west arms trace a cruciform footprint. Balaam, looking down from the heights, could not curse what he saw: "How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob... as the valleys are they spread forth."

TENT N · Dan 157,600 S · Reuben 151,450 W E · Judah 186,400
Schematic: larger tribal camps on the longer axis trace a cross. Illustrative, not a precise scale drawing.
VerdictEstablished (the census numbers) Model — the cross shape depends on how the camp is scaled; present it as a teaching image, not arithmetic proof.
8

The feasts of Leviticus 23, kept to the day by Christ

Leviticus 23 · John 19 · 1 Corinthians 15:20 · Acts 2:1

Seven appointed feasts fall in two clusters. Christ fulfilled the spring feasts on their exact dates: He died as the Passover lamb (14 Nisan), lay in the tomb through Unleavened Bread, rose on Firstfruits ("Christ the firstfruits", 1 Cor 15:20), and poured out the Spirit on Pentecost — the very day (Acts 2). The autumn feasts (Trumpets, Atonement, Tabernacles) remain unfulfilled.

Why it's remarkable: four distinct feasts, fixed in the calendar 1,400 years earlier, each landing on its own day in the one week it mattered — a pattern that then conspicuously pauses at the fall feasts.
VerdictEstablished (for the spring-feast alignment)
9

π hidden in the molten sea

1 Kings 7:23 · 2 Chronicles 4:2

The bronze "sea" is 10 cubits across and 30 cubits around — a rounded 3:1, which skeptics call a math error. But the Hebrew for "line / circumference" is written קוה (qvh) yet read קו (qv). The gematria ratio of the written to the read spelling is 111 / 106, and 30 × (111/106) = 31.41… — i.e. 3.1415, π to four places.

Honest take: the plain reading is simply rounding to one significant figure, which is normal ancient usage. The ketiv/qere "correction" is a real and striking textual feature — but it's a later observation read back into the text, not something the passage asks you to compute. Enjoy it; don't lean on it.
VerdictSpeculative
10

The 153 fish

John 21:11

The post-resurrection catch is recorded as exactly 153. The number is mathematically rich: it is the 17th triangular number (1+2+⋯+17 = 153) and equals the sum of the cubes of its own digits (1³+5³+3³ = 153). Interpreters from Augustine onward have mined it for meaning.

Honest take: the precision is the real evidence — it reads like an eyewitness counting the catch, not a round symbolic figure. The elaborate numerological meanings layered on top are devotional, not demonstrable.
VerdictSpeculative (the meanings) / the bare number is an eyewitness detail)
Tier 3 — Whole lives & events shaped as advance portraitsTypology: a person or episode that re-tells the gospel in miniature, centuries early.
11

The binding of Isaac (the Akedah)

Genesis 22

The beloved only son; a three-day journey; the son carries the wood up Mount Moriah — the temple mount, beside Golgotha — as Christ carried His cross; "God will provide himself a lamb"; a substitute ram caught by its head in a thicket of thorns; and the place named "on the mount of the LORD it shall be provided."

VerdictModel — one of the strongest typologies in Scripture; the geography (Moriah) is Established.
12

The bronze serpent lifted up

Numbers 21:8–9 → John 3:14

The very thing that was killing them — a serpent — is cast in bronze, lifted on a pole, and anyone who looks, lives. Jesus makes the type explicit about Himself: "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up."

VerdictEstablished — named by Jesus Himself.
13

Jonah — three days, then the nations

Jonah 1:17 → Matthew 12:40

"As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." Jesus names Jonah as the one sign He would give — a death-and-burial pattern followed by a mission that turns to the Gentiles.

VerdictEstablished — named by Jesus Himself.
14

The Passover lamb's unbroken bones

Exodus 12:46 · Psalm 34:20 → John 19:33–36

The Passover lamb must have no bone broken. At the cross the soldiers break the legs of the two thieves to hasten death — but finding Jesus already dead, they break none of His. John stops to tell you why: "that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken."

Why it's remarkable: a ritual butchery rule written at the Exodus governs a Roman execution detail 1,400 years later — a decision made by pagan soldiers who had never read it.
VerdictEstablished
15

Melchizedek — a priest with no beginning or end

Genesis 14:18–20 · Psalm 110:4 · Hebrews 7

King of righteousness, king of Salem (peace), priest of God Most High, who brings out bread and wine — and who appears in the record with no genealogy, no birth, no death. Hebrews reads this deliberate silence as a portrait: "made like unto the Son of God, abideth a priest continually."

VerdictEstablished — the NT builds doctrine on it directly (Hebrews 7).
16

Joseph — betrayed, buried, enthroned, forgiving

Genesis 37–50

Beloved son; hated and betrayed by his brothers; sold for pieces of silver; falsely condemned; "descends" into a pit and prison and "rises" to the right hand of the throne; and from that throne saves the very brothers who betrayed him in a time of famine: "ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good." Dozens of point-for-point parallels.

VerdictModel — the parallels are real and dense, though the NT never labels Joseph a "type" explicitly.
17

The tav mark — a cross as the seal of the saved

Ezekiel 9:4 (cf. Revelation 7:3)

The faithful in Jerusalem are to be spared by a mark set on the forehead. The Hebrew word is tav — the last letter of the alphabet — and in the paleo-Hebrew script of Ezekiel's day the letter tav was drawn as a cross (✕ or +). The saving seal is, literally, the sign of a cross on the forehead.

VerdictEstablished (the paleography) Model (the connection to Christ's cross)
Tier 4 — Kept in, and rated downPopular "patterns" that an honest case must flag. We don't cite these as proof.
18

The "Gospel" in the Genesis-5 names

Genesis 5 (Adam → Noah)

Read the ten names as a sentence and you get something like: "Man (Adam) is appointed (Seth) mortal (Enosh) sorrow (Kenan); the Blessed God (Mahalalel) shall come down (Jared) teaching (Enoch) that His death shall bring (Methuselah) the despairing (Lamech) rest/comfort (Noah)." Genuinely striking.

Honest take: several glosses are cherry-picked from among competing etymologies (Kenan, Jared and Methuselah especially have other defensible meanings). It's a beautiful teaching device, not a watertight code. Worth knowing; not load-bearing.
VerdictModel → Speculative

The "Bible Code" (equidistant letter sequences)

Rips–Witztum–Rosenberg (1994); Drosnin (1997); McKay et al. (1999)

The claim that hidden messages sit at equally-spaced letters in the Torah. The founding statistical study did not survive scrutiny: McKay, Bar-Natan, Bar-Hillel and Kalai found the same "codes" in Moby-Dick and War and Peace, and the effect vanished under proper controls. Treat it as refuted — and keep it out of any serious case.

VerdictRefuted

Panin's "rule of seven" heptads

Ivan Panin's numerics · tested in-house on the SBLGNT Greek NT

The claim that pervasive multiples of seven saturate the Greek/Hebrew text and prove divine authorship. Tested directly on the actual Greek New Testament in this very project, the pattern does not hold up beyond chance once you count honestly. Flagged here specifically so we never cite it.

VerdictDoes not hold

"Every pomegranate has 613 seeds"

Popular drash (613 = the commandments of the Torah)

A lovely teaching image — the pomegranate's seeds said to equal the 613 commandments. But actual seed counts range widely (roughly 200–1,400 per fruit). It's a sermon illustration, not a fact of botany.

The patterns the popular videos teach

These are the crimson-worm-style "whoa" patterns actually circulating on Christian YouTube and in the big teaching ministries — gathered from the channels that made each famous, with the person who popularized it named, and graded on the same honest scale. The undesigned-coincidences cluster is the strongest evidence here; the divine-council and design-pattern clusters are rich and mostly sound; several blockbuster claims (blood moons, Bible codes, DNA names) fail outright — and are kept in, marked Refuted, precisely because an honest teacher names them.

Biblical "design patterns" / literary hyperlinks
BibleProject — "Design Patterns in the Bible" podcast series
Authors deliberately repeat and escalate story templates (e.g. a sin-sequence "saw → took → hid"), so hundreds of narratives echo one another and climax in Jesus.
ModelInner-biblical allusion is a real, documented technique; "every pattern points to Jesus" is an interpretive overlay, not proof.
Gen 3:6 · Gen 4:7 · Josh 7:21 · 2 Sam 11
Genesis 1 as a 7-day cosmic-temple inauguration
John Walton ("The Lost World of Genesis One") → BibleProject & InspiringPhilosophy
Genesis 1 reads as the functional inauguration of creation as God's cosmic temple; the 7th-day "rest" is God taking up residence, not a claim about material manufacture.
ModelStrong Ancient-Near-East temple parallels; contested among scholars and not the only defensible reading.
Gen 1:1–2:3 · Ps 132:7–8,14 · Isa 66:1
The Flood narrative is a giant chiasm
Gordon Wenham (1978) → taught widely by BibleProject
Genesis 6–9 is a palindrome whose hinge is Gen 8:1, "God remembered Noah"; days, rising/falling waters, and animals-in/out mirror across that center.
Model (strong)One of the most defensible macro-chiasms, backed by 7/40/150-day symmetries; still involves some selective labeling.
Gen 6:9–9:19 (center 8:1)
Eden as a cosmic mountain-temple (motifs recur to Revelation)
BibleProject — "Temple" / "Tree of Life" (building on G.K. Beale)
Eden is painted in temple language (priestly "work/keep," east gate, cherubim, gold); mountain, chaotic-waters, and tree-of-life motifs run from Genesis to the New Jerusalem.
ModelThe Eden-as-temple parallels are mainstream; the full cosmic-temple synthesis is a strong reading, not a plain statement.
Gen 2:8–15 · Ezek 28:13–14 · Rev 21–22
"Forming & filling" symmetry of the six days
Framework reading (Kline, Blocher) — widely circulated; menorah overlay is a looser add-on
Days 1–3 form three realms (light, sea/sky, land); days 4–6 fill them with rulers (lights, fish/birds, animals/humans) — some further map it onto the 7-branch menorah.
ModelThe forming/filling parallel is near-consensus; the menorah mapping is a decorative Speculative overlay.

Seven signs + seven "I AM" sayings in John
Traditional / standard in commentaries · BibleProject's John overview
John is built around seven miracles and seven "I AM" sayings (bread, light, door, shepherd, resurrection, way, vine) echoing the divine name of Exodus 3:14.
ModelThe "I AM" set and the Exodus echo are sound; "exactly seven signs" requires reader selection (John 20:30 says there were many more).
John 6:35; 8:12; 10:7,11; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1 · Exod 3:14
The whole Bible converges on Jesus (typology)
Spoken Gospel · BibleProject · Reformed biblical theology
Every book ultimately testifies to Christ; OT figures and institutions are patterns intensified in Him.
EstablishedModelThe principle is text-stated (Luke 24:27; John 5:39); specific types range from solid (Passover lamb, bronze serpent) to Speculative (unnamed "types").
Luke 24:27,44 · John 5:39 · 1 Cor 5:7 · Heb 8–10
Honesty flag on this cluster: chiasm-hunting invites "chiasmania" — even randomly ordered text (famously Green Eggs and Ham) throws up chiastic shapes, so unconstrained claims are unreliable; Flood & Jonah survive scrutiny better than most. And every "exactly N" claim (7 signs, 3×14) hides omissions — Matthew drops three kings and his final set lists only 13 names. Disclose the omissions or the pattern is cooked.

Gematria 14 = David → Matthew's 3×14 generations
Matthew 1:17 itself; the David-gematria link is standard in NT scholarship
דוד (D-V-D = 4+6+4) = 14, and Matthew arranges the genealogy into three sets of fourteen to proclaim Jesus "Son of David."
ModelThe most defensible gematria claim — likely authorial intent — but a structuring device, and the generations are compressed to fit.
Matt 1:1–17
666 = Nero Caesar
Critical scholarship (Deissmann); taught across prophecy media
"Neron Kaisar" in Hebrew letters (נרון קסר) sums to 666 — the beast is Nero.
ModelThe strongest gematria case: it also explains the ancient 616 variant ("Nero" without the final nun). An identification, not proof.
Rev 13:18
888 = Iēsous (Ἰησοῦς)
Ancient (Sibylline Oracles; discussed by Irenaeus); revived in "888 vs 666" videos
The Greek letters of Jesus' name sum to 888 — resurrection's "8" tripled, set against the beast's 666.
ModelReal isopsephy, attested early — but spelling-dependent and post-hoc; even Irenaeus rejected reducing the Name to a letter-sum.

Messianic / Hebrew-roots video circuit (keyed to Zech 12:10, Gen 1:1)
The untranslated particle את (first + last Hebrew letters) is claimed as a secret "Alpha & Omega" mark of Christ the Creator.
Refutedאת is the ordinary direct-object marker (~11,000×), functioning identically in pagan Canaanite inscriptions; untranslated only because English has no equivalent.

YHWH pictographs = "Behold the hand, behold the nail"
Frank Seekins ("Hebrew Word Pictures") + countless crucifixion reels
Reading יהוה in paleo-Hebrew as pictures (hand / behold / nail / behold) supposedly spells a prophecy of the crucifixion inside God's name.
RefutedLetters don't carry lexical meaning; "nail → crucifixion" is an anachronistic overlay retrofitted onto the Name.

Paleo-pictograph word-decoding ("father" = "strength of the house")
Jeff Benner (Ancient Hebrew Research Center) · Frank Seekins
Every Hebrew word hides a picture-story (aleph = ox/strength, bet = house), so אב "father" decodes to "strength of the house."
RefutedNo predictive power; collapses on counterexamples (same letters reshuffled give unrelated words). Serious Hebraists reject the method.
method applied across the lexicon

Why Jesus asked Philip where to buy bread
John has Jesus turn to Philip (John 6:5) but never says why; John elsewhere notes Philip was from Bethsaida (1:44), and Luke independently sets the feeding near Bethsaida (9:10) — Jesus asked the local man.
EstablishedJohn 6:5 ↔ John 1:44 + Luke 9:10
The "much green grass" at Passover
Mark says the crowd sat on "green grass" (6:39) without explanation; John says it was near Passover (6:4) — spring, after the winter rains, the one season Judean hillsides are lush.
EstablishedMark 6:39 ↔ John 6:4
"Who hit you?" — the missing blindfold
Matthew's mockers strike Jesus and demand "Who struck you?" (26:67–68) — pointless unless He couldn't see; Luke supplies the fact that "they blindfolded him" (22:64).
EstablishedMatt 26:67–68 ↔ Luke 22:64
Why the council took Jesus to Pilate
Mark says the Sanhedrin condemned Him as "deserving death" (14:64), leaving unexplained why they needed Rome; John supplies the constraint — "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death" (18:31).
EstablishedMark 14:64 ↔ John 18:31
Malchus, and the disciple known to the high priest
Only John names the servant whose ear Peter cut (18:10) and later has "a relative of" that man accuse Peter (18:26); John also notes "the other disciple" was known to the high priest and got Peter into the courtyard (18:15–16).
EstablishedJohn 18:10 + 26 ↔ 18:15–16
Why the sick were brought "that evening"
Matthew says they waited until evening (8:16) without saying why; Mark and Luke identify the day as the Sabbath (Mark 1:21,29–34) — people waited for sunset to end it before carrying the sick.
EstablishedMatt 8:16 ↔ Mark 1:21,29–34
Paul's escape from Damascus in a basket
William Paley's founding example (1790)
Acts says "the Jews" watched the gates (9:23–25); Paul's own letter adds "the governor under King Aretas was guarding the city to seize me" (2 Cor 11:32–33) — neither names the other's agent, yet they cohere.
Established2 Cor 11:32–33 ↔ Acts 9:23–25
How Herod's private words reached the writers
Matthew reports Herod saying "to his servants" that Jesus was John raised (14:1–2); Luke incidentally lists "Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward" among Jesus' supporters (8:3) — a natural channel out of the palace.
ModelBoth verses explicit; the conduit (Joanna) is a reasonable inference.
Matt 14:1–2 ↔ Luke 8:3
The "Sons of Thunder" nickname
Mark says Jesus nicknamed James and John "Boanerges," Sons of Thunder (3:17), without explaining it; Luke shows their temper when they want to "call down fire" on a village (9:54).
ModelBoth explicit; linking the name to that one outburst is plausible but inferred — illustrative more than probative.
Mark 3:17 ↔ Luke 9:54
Nazareth already knew His reputation / the mending nets
Luke's Nazareth crowd cites Capernaum deeds he hasn't yet narrated (4:23); and the nets "mended" (Matt 4:21) vs "breaking" (Luke 5:6) — both offered as interlocks.
SpeculativeCredible non-coincidence explanations exist (Luke may have relocated the episode; the net scenes may be different events). Present as illustrative, not probative.
Luke 4:23 · Matt 4:21 / Luke 5:6
On this cluster: the skeptical reply (Richard Carrier) is that later authors simply elaborated earlier sources. The five "Established" cases above — blindfold, council/Pilate, Philip/Bethsaida, green grass, Damascus basket — survive that objection best, because the interlocking detail is incidental and serves no theological agenda. This is the one cluster here that works as positive evidence, not just illustration.

D · Heiser's divine-council worldview

Dr. Michael S. Heiser ("The Unseen Realm," the Naked Bible Podcast) · building on Alan Segal ("Two Powers in Heaven") · echoed across countless YouTube explainers
Deuteronomy 32:8–9 — nations divided by "the sons of God"
After Babel God set the nations' boundaries "according to the number of the sons of God," allotting each to a lesser divine being while keeping Israel as His own — on the older reading of 4QDeutj and the LXX, against the later Masoretic "sons of Israel."
Established (text)Model (synthesis)The "sons of God" variant is the preferred text-critical reading; the cosmic-geography framework built on it is interpretive.
Deut 32:8–9 (4QDeutj, LXX) · Gen 11 · Deut 4:19–20
Psalm 82 — God judges the "gods" of the divine council
God stands in the divine council and sentences the elohim who were given the nations but ruled unjustly to "die like men." Heiser reads these as real spiritual beings, not human judges.
ModelWell-defended, with ANE parallels; the "human judges" reading is an old, still-live alternative.
Ps 82:1,6–7 · cf. 1 Kgs 22:19–22 · John 10:34–36
"Two powers in heaven" — the second-Yahweh figure
The OT repeatedly shows a figure both distinct from and identified as Yahweh (the Angel who speaks as God; Daniel 7's human-like one). Segal showed Second-Temple Jews accepted a "two powers" godhead until rabbis branded it heresy — partly reacting to Christian claims.
Established (phenomenon)Model (synthesis)The textual data and the history of the rabbinic heresy are solid; reading it as coherent proto-binitarian theology is interpretive.

Babel disinherited → Pentecost reverses it
At Babel God scattered the nations under lesser elohim; at Pentecost the Spirit lets Jews "from every nation" hear the gospel in their own tongues — the start of reclaiming the disinherited nations. Acts 2's nation-list echoes the Genesis 10 Table of Nations.
ModelAn elegant, widely noted intertext; its full force depends on accepting the Deut 32 reading.
Gen 10–11 · Deut 32:8–9 · Acts 2:5–11
Bashan, Mount Hermon, the Rephaim & the "gates of hell"
The giant Rephaim (Og of Bashan) cluster around Hermon — in 1 Enoch the very mountain where the Watchers descended; Jesus declares "the gates of Hades will not prevail" at Caesarea Philippi/Banias, a pagan cult site at Hermon's foot.
Established (background)Speculative (intent)The geography and texts are factual; that Jesus chose the spot as a "declaration of war" is inferred, not stated.

"Elohim" = resident of the spirit realm, not a species
In Hebrew elohim names any inhabitant of the non-embodied realm — Yahweh, the gods of the nations, angels, even the dead Samuel "coming up as an elohim." It denotes a plane of existence; Yahweh alone is the uncreated Creator among them.
ModelA coherent lexical heuristic that defuses "polytheism" charges; it is Heiser's framing, debated by some Hebraists.

Genesis 1:1 — the universe had a beginning
William Lane Craig (Reasonable Faith / kalam) · Hugh Ross
"In the beginning God created…" asserts an absolute temporal origin, converging with Big-Bang cosmology and the Borde–Guth–Vilenkin theorem that any expanding universe has a past boundary.
Model (strong)A real, weighty convergence via the kalam argument — but retrodiction, not a specific prediction, and BGV is model-dependent.

Levitical quarantine & washing in running water
Widely circulated (S.I. McMillen, "None of These Diseases")
Leviticus isolates the infectious, washes in "living" water, launders/burns contaminated items, and buries waste outside camp — effective public health millennia before germ theory.
Model (strongest health case)Genuinely ahead of its time — but these are ritual-purity laws, not a microbe theory ("leprosy" even includes mildew).
Lev 13–15 · Num 19 · Deut 23:12–14
Ecclesiastes 1:6–7 — wind circuits & the water cycle
Widely circulated (Creation.com, ICR)
The wind returns on its circuits and rivers run to a never-full sea and back — an apt description of evaporation/precipitation and atmospheric circulation.
ModelOne of the better cases — but observational wisdom-poetry, and other ancients observed the same cycles.
Eccl 1:6–7
Job 26:7 — "he hangeth the earth upon nothing"
Widely circulated (ICR, apologetics tracts)
Job pictures the earth suspended on nothing — against myths of a world borne by Atlas or resting on pillars.
ModelGenuinely striking, but poetry: the same book also speaks of "pillars of the earth / heaven." It evokes rather than states modern cosmology.
Job 26:7 · cf. 26:11; 9:6
The Star of Bethlehem (Jupiter–Regulus, the planet that "stopped")
Rick Larson — "The Star of Bethlehem" (2007 film)
In 3–2 BC Jupiter made a triple conjunction with Regulus, met Venus, then went retrograde and "stopped" over Bethlehem — matching the Magi's star and Revelation 12 as a sky sign.
SpeculativeThe motions are real, but the scheme needs Herod dying in 1 BC, which almost all historians reject (4 BC); rival models fit the same sky.
Matt 2:1–11 · Rev 12:1–5
Isaiah 40:22 — "the circle of the earth" = a sphere
Widely circulated (ICR, Answers in Genesis)
Isaiah's "circle (chug) of the earth" is said to show the Bible knew the planet is a globe.
Speculative (weak)Chug = circle/disk/vault, not a sphere; Hebrew had a word for "ball" (dûr) the writer didn't use. Commonly overstated.
Isa 40:22 · cf. Isa 22:18
The AD 33 crucifixion "blood moon"
Colin Humphreys & Waddington (Nature, 1983); recirculated as "NASA confirms"
A lunar eclipse reddened the moon over Jerusalem on Fri 3 Apr AD 33, fitting Joel 2:31 / Acts 2:20 and dating the crucifixion.
Speculative (mixed)The eclipse is real and may fit Peter's Joel quote — but it rose hours after the cross, and the midday darkness can't be a solar eclipse (Passover is always a full moon).
Matt 27:45 · Joel 2:31 · Acts 2:20
"Stretches out the heavens" = the expanding universe
Hugh Ross; Russell Humphreys; widely circulated
Verses about God "stretching out the heavens" are said to prefigure the expansion of space.
Speculative → RefutedHebrew natah pictures pitching a tent — a static canopy "like a tent to dwell in" (Isa 40:22) — not ongoing elastic expansion.

Maury's "paths of the seas" / "springs of the sea"
Widely circulated — the Matthew Fontaine Maury legend
Maury supposedly discovered ocean currents only after reading Psalm 8:8, and Job 38:16 foretold deep-sea vents.
RefutedThe origin story is historically dubious (currents were charted earlier); the verses are poetry retrofitted onto modern oceanography.
Ps 8:8 · Job 38:16
The "Revelation 12 sign" of September 23, 2017
Viral on YouTube (notably Scottie Clarke)
Virgo "clothed with the sun," moon at her feet, 12 stars, Jupiter in her womb — a once-in-7,000-years sign that Rev 12 was being fulfilled (many predicted the Rapture).
RefutedThe configuration recurs several times per millennium, the "12 stars" count is ad hoc, and the predicted Rapture simply didn't happen.
Rev 12:1–5

The Harbinger / Isaiah 9:10 "paradigm"
Jonathan Cahn — "The Harbinger" (2011)
Israel's defiant vow to rebuild after an Assyrian strike (Isa 9:10) is a template God is "replaying" over America, tying 9/11 and the 2008 crash to ancient judgment.
RefutedPure eisegesis — a historical oracle against the northern kingdom, with the "tower" smuggled in from the LXX to force the Ground-Zero fit.
Isa 9:10
The Shemitah / Mystery of the Jubilee
Jonathan Cahn — "The Mystery of the Shemitah" (2014)
A seven-year sabbath cycle governs financial collapses and world events, pointing to a 2015 disaster.
RefutedThe 2015 collapse never came; the claim is unfalsifiable — any outcome gets counted as a "hit."
Lev 25 · Deut 15:1–2
Four Blood Moons / the lunar tetrad
Mark Biltz & John Hagee — "Four Blood Moons" (2013)
The 2014–15 tetrad of eclipses on Passover/Tabernacles was an end-times sign for Israel.
RefutedTetrads are common and predictable (62 since the 1st century), weren't even visible over Israel, and nothing prophesied occurred.
Joel 2:31 · Gen 1:14 · Rev 6:12
God's name (YHWH) "encoded in human DNA"
Viral "hidden name of the Creator in your DNA" videos
DNA's elements (H, N, O, C) map by atomic weight to the Hebrew letters of YHWH.
RefutedBad chemistry — it ignores phosphorus (actually in the backbone) and invents sulfur bridges that aren't there; the letter-matching is contrived.
loosely leans on Ps 139:13–16
Date-set Rapture — "May 21, 2011"
Harold Camping (Family Radio)
Bible chronology and number patterns "pinpointed" Judgment Day to 21 May 2011 (then 21 Oct 2011).
RefutedBoth dates passed; Camping later called date-setting "sinful." The textbook violation of "no one knows the day or hour" (Matt 24:36).
misused Genesis / 2 Pet 3:8
The "Bible Code" (ELS predictions)
Michael Drosnin — "The Bible Code" (1997)
Equal-interval letter skips through the Torah spell hidden predictions of assassinations, wars, disasters.
RefutedMcKay et al. extracted the same "predictions" from Moby-Dick and War and Peace — with a long text, ELS finds anything.

"Mandela effect" — the lion lies down with the lamb
Viral "the Bible was supernaturally changed" reels
People "remember" Isaiah 11:6 reading "the lion shall lie down with the lamb," and claim the text was altered to "wolf."
RefutedIsaiah 11:6 has always read "wolf…with the lamb" in the Hebrew and KJV; "lion and lamb" is a popular paraphrase — a memory error, not a changed Bible.
Isa 11:6 · cf. 65:25

What the whole set actually argues

No single one of these is a proof by itself — a worm, a plant name, a census count, a number in a net. That's the point. What's striking is the same shape appearing across unrelated genres and centuries: substitution, death-then-life, scarlet-then-white, lifted-up-and-look, three days. A forger controls his own text; he does not control insect biology, the blooming order of trees, the butchery habits of Roman soldiers, or what the rabbis would later admit about their own Temple.

The honest verdict is cumulative and graded: the Established items (hyssop, unbroken bones, the bronze serpent, Jonah, Melchizedek, the feasts, and the best undesigned coincidences) are solid on the text alone; the Model items illuminate the shape without bearing doctrinal weight; and the Refuted items — blood moons, Bible codes, DNA names, date-setting — are named and set aside. A case that polices its own weak material is the kind worth trusting.

If you had to rank the single strongest evidential family on this whole page, it is the undesigned coincidences (Part II·C): small, incidental, cross-document details that fit like tongue-and-groove and serve no author's agenda — the closest thing here to independent eyewitness confirmation.
