Nephilim & the Giants

● LOCAL / NON-LIVE — not published to godexamined.com

A deep dive into the giants of the Bible — the Nephilim, the Anakim and Rephaim, Og of Bashan, Goliath — and every claim you’ve seen about giant bones and massive weapons. This topic is a minefield of hoaxes, so every claim below is graded honestly: what’s confirmed, what’s a reasonable reading, what scholars dispute, and what is outright fraud. The real story turns out to be more interesting than the fake one.

🧭 How to read this — three things kept apart

Three things have to be kept apart, or this topic turns to nonsense fast. (1) What the texts say — Genesis, 1 Enoch, the Mesopotamian sages, the Greek Gigantomachy, the Norse jötnar all describe a primeval age of larger-than-life beings ended by a flood. That shared motif is real and well-attested — as literature and theology. (2) What archaeology supports — genuinely tall individuals, enormous megaliths, oversized ceremonial weapons, and Ice-Age megafauna fossils that ancient people reasonably mistook for giants. These explain the raw material of the legends without any lost race. (3) What is hoax or myth — 12-foot excavated skeletons (Photoshop), the “Smithsonian cover-up” (a circular conspiracy), and alien Anunnaki (fabricated translations). The honest verdict: the Nephilim tradition is authentic ancient myth-making with real perceptual and cultural roots — not evidence of a physical race of giants.

Part I · What the texts actually say

The Nephilim as literature, memory, and theology — in the Bible, in Second-Temple books like 1 Enoch, and across the whole ancient world.

The biblical & textual data — what Scripture actually says

The Nephilim appear in only two Hebrew passages (Genesis 6:1–4 and Numbers 13:33). The bare text is terse and ambiguous; the “giant” identity is amplified by the Greek translation and later elaboration. And the manuscripts themselves disagree at the key points.

CONFIRMED

Genesis 6:1–4 links the “sons of God,” human women, and the Nephilim — calling the offspring “the mighty men of old, men of renown.”

It is a four-verse fragment; the Hebrew syntax never actually says the Nephilim ARE that offspring. It stresses renown and violence (gibborim) as much as size.

Genesis 6:1–4 (MT); Ronald Hendel, JBL (1987)

DISPUTED

“Nephilim” probably does NOT simply mean “fallen ones.”

The popular “fallen” gloss is folk etymology; the form doesn't match a standard participle of naphal. Many derive it from Aramaic naphila (“giant”) or treat it as an archaic loanword of uncertain origin.

HALOT lexicon; Heiser, The Unseen Realm (2015); Doak, The Last of the Rephaim (2012)

CONFIRMED

The “giant” identity was amplified by the Septuagint, which rendered Nephilim as gigantes.

The Greek translators chose gigantes — loaded with Greek myth of earth-born rebels — for Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13:33; Jerome's Vulgate followed. This translation choice, not the Hebrew, cemented “giants” in the Western tradition.

Septuagint Gen 6:4; Emanuel Tov, Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible (2012)

INTERPRETIVE

There are three main readings of “sons of God”: divine beings/Watchers, the godly line of Seth, or dynastic rulers claiming divinity.

bene ha-elohim elsewhere denotes the divine council (Job 1:6; 38:7) — the earliest and most common critical reading. The Sethite view was popularized by Augustine; the “divine kings” view reads them as tyrants. The bare text does not decide.

John Day, Yahweh and the Gods of Canaan (2000)

CONFIRMED

Numbers 13:33's “we were like grasshoppers” is framed by the narrative as the spies' faithless, exaggerated “evil report.”

Numbers 13:32 calls it a dibbah (slanderous report), and 14:36–37 has God punish the spies for it — so the giant claim is presented as fear-driven hyperbole within the story's own logic.

Numbers 13:32–33; 14:36–37 (MT)

DISPUTED

Goliath's height is itself a manuscript variant, and the earliest witnesses give a far smaller figure.

The MT reads “six cubits and a span” (~9'9'), but the Qumran scroll 4QSam-a, the Septuagint, and Josephus read “FOUR cubits and a span” (~6'9') — tall but human. Most critics judge the shorter reading older, the MT number inflated in transmission.

1 Sam 17:4 (MT vs 4QSam-a & LXX); Tov (2012)

CONFIRMED

2 Samuel 21 lists four Philistine warriors “descended from the giant (ha-rapha)” of Gath — including one with six fingers and six toes.

The polydactyl warrior is a real congenital trait; the passage clusters “giant” champions geographically at Gath — Goliath's city. It also creates a famous tension: 2 Sam 21:19 credits Elhanan with killing “Goliath,” which 1 Chron 20:5 smooths to Goliath's brother.

2 Sam 21:15–22; 1 Chron 20:4–8 (MT)

The Anakim, Rephaim & giant peoples — real memory, layered legend

The biblical “giant” peoples sit where real ancient memory meets theological legend. The two firmest extra-biblical anchors are Egyptian and Ugaritic — but they show the names were real long before they show anyone was a giant.

CONFIRMED

At Ugarit the rpum / rapiuma — cognate of Hebrew “Rephaim” — denote deified royal dead and heroic warrior-ancestors invited to cultic feasts, NOT literal giants.

The Rephaim texts (KTU 1.20–22, Late Bronze Age) depict the rpum as divine/heroic figures travelling by chariot to a seven-day feast; a funerary text (KTU 1.161) summons a dead king's ancestors and the rpu to a meal.

Wikipedia ‘Rephaim text’; D. Pardee, Ritual and Cult at Ugarit

PLAUSIBLE

Egyptian Execration Texts (c. 19th–18th c. BC) name a Canaanite group “Iy-anaq,” widely read as the “Anaq” people behind the biblical Anakim.

Middle Kingdom curse-lists on sherds and figurines name Iy-anaq with three Semitic-named rulers. The link to the Anakim is popular but not certain — the biblical Anakite chiefs (Sheshai, Talmai) read as Hurrian, not matching.

Wikipedia ‘Anak’ / ‘Execration texts’

CONFIRMED

The Anakim are localized to Hebron / Kiriath-arba, with three named chiefs driven out by Caleb.

Joshua 11, 14–15 and Numbers 13 place the Anakim at Hebron and name Sheshai, Ahiman, Talmai. Some of these names read as Hurrian, complicating a purely Semitic “Iy-anaq” identification.

Encyclopedia.com ‘Anak, Anakim’; Numbers 13; Joshua 15

CONFIRMED

Deuteronomy 2 explicitly equates regional peoples — Emim (Moab) and Zamzummim (Ammon) — with the Rephaim, benchmarked against the Anakim.

Deut 2:10–11, 20–21 say each people was “great and many, and tall as the Anakim… counted as Rephaim,” but called Emim / Zamzummim locally. The Anakim are the fixed standard of height.

Deuteronomy 2:10–21

DISPUTED

“Rephaim” is a genuinely layered term — no consensus among giants vs. the dead vs. a warrior class.

Scholarship (L'Heureux 1979) maps three approaches: minor deities becoming “shades of the dead”; an aristocratic warrior-guild; and deified ancestors. The philology pits root rp' (“heal/be hale”) against rph (“sink, be weak” = powerless shades).

C. L'Heureux, Rank Among the Canaanite Gods (1979)

INTERPRETIVE

Amos 2:9's Amorites “tall as the cedars” is hyperbolic poetry, not a stature measurement.

The cedar/oak simile is a standard idiom of might and pride (cf. Isa 2:13; Ezek 31), magnifying the enemy to credit God — not a biological claim about giants.

Amos 2:9 (MT); prophetic-poetry commentary

INTERPRETIVE

The mainstream view: a kernel of real, tall pre-Israelite peoples was elaborated into a legendary “giant” category serving Israel's land-claim ideology.

Deuteronomy frames Rephaim/Emim/Zamzummim/Anakim as displaced former nations — a recurring “former giants driven out by God” motif that legitimizes the conquest. Brian Doak reads the oversized body as a symbol of primeval chaos and a barrier to right rule.

Brian Doak, The Last of the Rephaim (Harvard, 2012)

1 Enoch, the Watchers & the Book of Giants

Second-Temple writers expanded the four cryptic verses of Genesis 6 into a full mythology of angelic rebellion. This is where the giants get colossal — and where the Dead Sea Scrolls give us real manuscripts of a lost “Book of Giants.”

LITERARY

The Book of the Watchers (1 Enoch 6–16) narrates 200 angelic “Watchers” who descend on Mount Hermon, take human wives, and beget giants.

Two interwoven strands: Shemihazah (marriage → giants) and Asael (teaching forbidden arts — metallurgy, weaponry, cosmetics, sorcery, astrology). This detailed myth is post-biblical elaboration read back onto Genesis' four verses.

Nickelsburg, 1 Enoch 1: A Commentary (2001)

LITERARY

In the tradition the giants devastate the earth — devouring its produce, then people — and this triggers the Flood as judgment.

1 Enoch 7 describes escalating violence and bloodshed; the earth “cries out,” prompting the archangels' intercession and God's decree of the Flood.

Archie Wright, The Origin of Evil Spirits (2005)

LITERARY

1 Enoch 15 makes the spirits released from the dead giants into the demons/unclean spirits that afflict humanity — an etiology of evil.

Being hybrids of spirit and flesh, the giants at death produce “evil spirits” that remain to oppress people. Explaining a category of evil spirit was a central aim of the text.

1 Enoch 15:8–12; Wright (2005)

CONFIRMED

A real “Book of Giants,” in Aramaic, was found in ten copies at Qumran — expanding the giants into named characters.

Manuscripts (1Q23, 4Q203, 4Q530–533, etc.) dramatize the giant brothers Ohyah and Hahyah and the emissary Mahaway receiving dream-visions of their coming destruction.

Stuckenbruck, The Book of Giants from Qumran (1997)

CONFIRMED

The Book of Giants directly borrows Mesopotamian figures — it names the giant “Gilgamesh” and a figure matching Humbaba.

A striking case of a Jewish text absorbing names straight from the Epic of Gilgamesh, showing conscious literary borrowing.

Stuckenbruck (1997); 4Q530–531

CONFIRMED

The Book of Giants was later reused by the prophet Mani (3rd c. AD) as Manichaean scripture; before Qumran it was known only from those later fragments (Turfan).

Manichaean fragments in Middle Persian, Sogdian, Parthian and Uyghur were recovered from Turfan; the Qumran copies showed Mani drew on the earlier Aramaic Enochic work.

W. B. Henning, BSOAS (1943); Stuckenbruck (1997)

DISPUTED

The giants' colossal height (300 or 3,000 cubits) is a scribal expansion that grew in transmission, not a fixed figure.

The Ethiopic of 1 Enoch 7:2 gives 300 cubits in some witnesses and 3,000 in others; the Greek reads 3,000. The enormous number is treated as a secondary gloss.

Nickelsburg (2001), on 7:2

CONFIRMED

The New Testament inherits this tradition: Jude 14–15 directly quotes 1 Enoch 1:9, and Jude 6 / 2 Peter 2:4 presuppose the Watchers' imprisonment.

Jude attributes a near-verbatim quotation to “Enoch, the seventh from Adam”; 2 Peter says God cast the sinning angels into “Tartarus” in chains.

Jude 6, 14–15; 2 Peter 2:4; Reed, Fallen Angels (2005)

Giants everywhere — the ancient world's shared “age of heroes”

Genesis' Nephilim sit inside a near-universal pattern: a primeval age when semi-divine or oversized beings walked the earth, closed off by a flood. That the motif is worldwide is itself a clue to what it is.

CONFIRMED

Mesopotamia had seven antediluvian sages (apkallu) who taught pre-Flood humanity, paired with pre-Flood kings — a structural parallel to the Watchers/Nephilim.

The apkallu appear in the Bit Meseri myth, the Uruk Sage List, and Berossus; scholars (Kvanvig, Annus) note the parallel, and Heiser explicitly links the Nephilim to the apkallu.

Amar Annus, JSP (2010); Kvanvig, Primeval History

CONFIRMED

The Sumerian King List gives pre-Flood kings fantastically long reigns, mirroring the long-lived patriarchs of Genesis 5.

The Weld-Blundell Prism opens with Alulim reigning 28,800 years, then a flood, after which reigns shorten toward historical lengths — the same pre-Flood-longevity-then-decline structure.

Ashmolean, Weld-Blundell Prism

CONFIRMED

The Greek Gigantes were earth-born beings who warred on the Olympians in the Gigantomachy (often conflated with the Titans).

Apollodorus and Hesiodic tradition describe them as Gaia's offspring, later shown with serpent legs, immortalized on the Pergamon Altar frieze.

Theoi.com; World History Encyclopedia

CONFIRMED

Norse tradition had giants (jötnar) descended from Ymir, most drowned in a flood of his blood — a giants-plus-deluge motif with an ark analogue.

In the Prose Edda the gods slay Ymir and build the world from his body; his blood floods and drowns the jötnar except Bergelmir, who escapes in a hollowed trunk and refounds the race.

Snorri Sturluson, Prose Edda (Gylfaginning)

MYTH

“Anunnaki” means the Sumerian pantheon (offspring of Anu) — NOT giant alien astronauts; Sitchin's reading is fabricated.

“Anunnaki” roughly means “princely offspring of Anu.” Sitchin's Nibiru / gold-mining-slaves narrative appears nowhere in Sumerian literature; Assyriologists document that he invented cuneiform readings.

sitchiniswrong.com (Heiser); Assyriological consensus

INTERPRETIVE

The near-universal “giants/heroes before the flood” motif reflects theology and memory, not a literal lost race.

The shared pattern marks primeval chaos, a heroic “other,” and the boundary a deluge closes — best explained as convergent mythic framing, not convergent zoology.

Doak (2012); Wright (2005)

Mount Hermon, Bashan & the Gates of Hades

A cluster of real sites and ancient texts sits behind a striking theological synthesis: the Watchers descended on Hermon, Bashan was the “land of the Rephaim” and of the dead, and Jesus staged his “gates of Hades” declaration at its foot. The sites and texts are solid; the unifying map is a modern, contested reading.

CONFIRMED

1 Enoch 6 names Mount Hermon as the Watchers’ descent-site, with a Hebrew pun on Hermon / herem (“oath, ban”).

1 Enoch 6:6 places the descent on “the summit of Mount Hermon” and says the 200 Watchers “swore together and bound one another by a curse.” The wordplay is real (working in Hebrew/Aramaic behind the Greek/Ethiopic).

1 Enoch 6; Nickelsburg, 1 Enoch 1 (Hermeneia)

CONFIRMED

A real oath-associated temple, Qasr Antar, stands on Hermon’s summit (~2,814 m) — the highest known temple of antiquity.

Documented by Charles Warren (1869); its Greek inscription concerns those “taking an oath.” The stele is now in the British Museum. The site is genuine, generally Roman-era.

Nickelsburg, 1 Enoch 1; British Museum

DISPUTED

That the Qasr Antar stone confirms the Watchers’ oath of 1 Enoch 6.

Real stone, tenuous connection: it names no Watchers and is centuries later than 1 Enoch, and oath-stones are common everywhere. Popular claims that it “proves” the Watchers’ oath overreach the evidence.

Genesis Marks the Spot; Nickelsburg (cautious ‘might’)

CONFIRMED

Ugaritic texts call the god Rapiu “enthroned at Ashtaroth, judging at Edrei” — exactly Og’s two cities (Deut 1:4; Josh 12:4).

KTU 1.108 opens with Rapiu ruling in Ashtaroth and judging in Edrei; rp’um = biblical Rephaim. The onomastic overlap with Og-as-last-of-the-Rephaim is a genuine, well-cited philological parallel.

‘Biblical King Og and the Ugaritic Deity Rāpi’u’; TheTorah.com, ‘The Rephaim’

PLAUSIBLE

In Ugaritic religion the rp’um were shades of dead royal ancestors, giving Bashan an underworld connotation on top of its biblical role as “land of the Rephaim.”

Ugaritic rp’um denote deified dead kings in funerary/necromantic ritual; the Hebrew Bible independently uses rephaim both for giant clans and for the shades of the dead (Isa 14:9; Ps 88:10). The “gateway to the underworld” framing is a scholarly synthesis, not an explicit biblical statement.

TheTorah.com; Denver Journal, ‘The Rephaim’

CONFIRMED

Caesarea Philippi (Banias) held a grotto and temple of Pan at a cave anciently linked to the underworld — the setting of Jesus’ “the gates of Hades will not prevail” (Matt 16:13-18).

The site was Baal-gad/Baal-hermon, then the Pan sanctuary (Panion), then Herod Philip’s Caesarea Philippi. The excavated Pan cave and spring are real, and the cave was popularly linked to a passage to Hades.

Matthew 16:13-18; Banias archaeology

CONFIRMED

Tel Dan, in the same Hermon-foot region, preserves a large Iron-Age Israelite high place (bamah), plausibly Jeroboam I’s rival golden-calf sanctuary (1 Kgs 12).

Biran’s excavations exposed a stepped platform in three phases plus altars, horned-altar fragments and votive finds, in use into the Hellenistic period. (Its cult is Israelite; the relevance is regional sacred geography.)

Madain Project; Biran excavations (BAR)

INTERPRETIVE

Michael Heiser’s “cosmic geography” unifies Hermon-Bashan-Rephaim-Nephilim-Banias, reading Matt 16:18 as Jesus challenging the Watchers’/underworld’s “headquarters.”

The individual data points are real and the synthesis is text-aware, but it is a modern theological construction, provocative and contested — and the Transfiguration mountain is unnamed in the Gospels (Tabor is the older traditional site).

Giants around the world — the same story everywhere

Independent of the biblical and Greco-Norse traditions, near-identical “giant former race, destroyed by flood or hero” packages appear across India, Mesoamerica, Native America, the Basque country and Britain. Folklorists explain the convergence by independent invention, diffusion, forgotten monument-builders, and misread fossils — not a real lost race.

FOLKLORE

Hindu tradition has the daityas and danavas (asura giants) as a race of giant antagonists subdued by Vishnu’s avatars — a distinct, non-biblical “giant former race.”

Puranic genealogy makes devas and asuras half-brothers; the daityas dwell in subterranean Patala and seize cosmic power until Varaha, Narasimha and Vamana defeat them.

Wikipedia ‘Daitya’/‘Danava’; Devdutt Pattanaik

LEGEND

The Puranic flood — Vishnu as the fish Matsya warning Manu, who preserves seed in a boat — is the Indic branch of the near-global deluge-and-survivor motif.

Narrated in the Shatapatha Brahmana and Bhagavata Purana; Matsya rescues the Vedas and reveals sacred knowledge to Manu during the deluge, often paired with the destruction of a prior race.

LEGEND

Aztec tradition credits the Quinametzin giants of an earlier Sun with building Teotihuacan and Cholula, destroyed in a cataclysm.

The chronicler Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxochitl uniquely records that they were destroyed for “grave sins” amid the flood that ended their era; sources disagree on which Sun they belonged to.

Excavations (1911-24) found genuine baskets and duck decoys but no giant-sized remains; the “red hair” is post-mortem oxidation of dark hair, and the “giant” spin traces to tourist-display entrepreneurs.

Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins (1882); Brian Dunning

FOLKLORE

Comanche, Ojibwe, Choctaw/Chickasaw and Lenape (Alligewi) traditions independently include giant former races — breadth across unrelated language families argues for independent invention.

A 19th-c. Comanche account describes a ~10-foot race that “forgot justice” and was destroyed; Choctaw/Chickasaw tell of the Nahullo cannibal giants; the Lenape overthrow the “giant” Alligewi — a Native titanomachy.

native-languages.org; EsoterX

INTERPRETIVE

The Walam Olum, main text of the Lenape flood/Allegewi story, is widely judged a 19th-century hoax — a caution that not every “ancient” giant text is authentic.

Published by Rafinesque in the 1830s; linguistic and ethnographic analysis (notably David Oestreicher) produced significant evidence of fabrication.

FOLKLORE

Basque tradition attributes the megaliths — dolmens, cromlechs — to giant jentilak/mairuak, a textbook euhemerization of forgotten Neolithic builders.

Geoffrey of Monmouth; Wikipedia ‘Gogmagog’

INTERPRETIVE

Folklorists explain the worldwide recurrence of giant-lore by independent invention, diffusion, euhemerized memory of megaliths/mounds, and misread fossils — not a literal lost race.

'Uj ibn Anaq — Og the giant in Islamic & Jewish tradition

Og of Bashan generated a vast body of later LEGEND. Rabbinic midrash has him survive the Flood clinging to the Ark and die when Moses leaps to strike his ankle; Islamic storytelling recasts him as the colossus ‘Uj ibn ‘Anaq, who waded through the Flood. These are reception traditions, not history.

INTERPRETIVE

The giant traditions are exegetical expansions anchored to specific verses — Gen 6, Num 13 (Anak), Deut 3:11 (Og’s bed) — and the Islamic name ‘Uj ibn ‘Anaq fuses Og with the Anak/Anakim.

Deut 3:11’s note on Og’s 9-cubit bed was an open invitation later readers filled with giant-lore; the Islamic name ties Og to the biblical ‘Anaq of Numbers 13.

Deut 3:11; Num 13:33; Jewish Encyclopedia, ‘Og’

LEGEND

Rabbinic tradition holds Og survived Noah’s Flood by clinging to the Ark, a bridge figure between the antediluvian Nephilim and the historical age.

Zevachim 113b and Niddah 61a treat Og as a Flood survivor; Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer 23 has him ride the Ark’s exterior and swear to serve Noah. Niddah 61a even makes Og a grandson of the fallen angel Shemhazai.

b. Niddah 61a; b. Zevachim 113b; Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer 23

LEGEND

Berakhot 54b dramatizes Og’s death: he uproots a mountain to hurl at Israel, God’s insects bore it so it collars his neck, and Moses (ten cubits tall) leaps ten cubits to strike Og’s ankle.

The hyperbolic dimensions (his thighbone “over three parasangs”) mark the passage as homiletic exaggeration about divine providence over brute strength.

b. Berakhot 54b; Sefaria

LEGEND

Islamic qisas al-anbiya recast Og as ‘Uj ibn ‘Anaq, a colossus so tall the Flood reached only his knees, living millennia until Moses killed him.

Al-Tha‘labi’s ‘Ara’is al-Majalis describes him surviving the Deluge by wading, then ruling Bashan. Crucially, ‘Uj is NOT named in the Quran — he is a figure of extra-Quranic storytelling (israiliyat).

al-Tha‘labi, Qisas al-Anbiya’; Wikipedia

LEGEND

The signature Islamic scene — ‘Uj balancing a mountain to drop on the Israelites, a bird boring it, Moses striking his ankle — mirrors the rabbinic Berakhot account, showing cross-traditional transmission.

Tha‘labi recounts a hoopoe boring the rock so it falls around ‘Uj’s neck; the near-identical plot in two traditions is a clear case of shared late-antique legend.

al-Tha‘labi; Balami, Tarikhnama

LITERARY

Enochic Watcher motifs (angels who descend and teach forbidden knowledge) are refracted in the Quranic pair Harut and Marut at Babylon (Q 2:102).

Q 2:102 names two angels who taught sorcery; exegetes elaborated the tale from Talmudic, Syriac and Iranian material, paralleling the fallen-angel legend of 1 Enoch — reworked as human moral testing.

Quran 2:102; Reed, Fallen Angels (2005)

INTERPRETIVE

Islamicists and folklorists (Wheeler, Reed, Adang) read the ‘Uj/Og and Harut-Marut material as narrative and exegetical tradition — shared late-antique storytelling — not history.

Wheeler situates the Moses/giant episodes within a web of Gilgamesh, the Alexander Romance, the Targums and rabbinic exegesis; the consensus frame is intertextual reception history.

From Enoch to the “return of the Nephilim” — the long afterlife

1 Enoch had an outsized afterlife: quoted as prophecy in the New Testament, then dropped in the West and preserved complete only in Ethiopia, then rediscovered in 1773 — and today fused with UFO lore into a “return of the Nephilim” industry. The reception-history facts are solid; the modern hybrid eschatology runs far beyond the four verses of Genesis 6.

CONFIRMED

The New Testament Epistle of Jude (14-15) directly quotes 1 Enoch (1:9), attributing it to “Enoch, the seventh from Adam.”

This citation is undisputed and became the key lever for the book’s authority in the early church; Tertullian argued Jude’s use amounted to apostolic endorsement.

N. J. Moore, Journal of Theological Studies 64 (2013)

CONFIRMED

1 Enoch was valued by the Epistle of Barnabas, Justin Martyr, Athenagoras and Irenaeus, and explicitly defended as Scripture by Tertullian.

The Watchers myth underpins early Christian demonology; Tertullian (De cultu feminarum 1.3) calls Enoch scriptura and cites its Flood-survival, Christ-relevance, and Jude’s quotation.

Tertullian, De cultu feminarum 1.3

CONFIRMED

The West shifted from the angelic reading to the “Sethite” view (Julius Africanus, then Augustine) and dropped 1 Enoch as apocryphal.

Africanus introduced the Sethite alternative; Augustine (City of God 15) made it dominant amid unease over angel-lust stories that pagan critics exploited. Jerome and Augustine classed Enoch as apocryphal.

Augustine, De civitate Dei 15.23

CONFIRMED

The complete text of 1 Enoch survived only in Geʽez within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, which kept it canonical.

Excluded from Eastern and Western canon lists by the 4th-5th centuries, it was never dropped by the Ethiopian church — the only continuous complete transmission.

Ethiopian biblical-canon scholarship

CONFIRMED

James Bruce brought Geʽez manuscripts of 1 Enoch from Ethiopia to Europe in 1773, enabling the first modern translations.

Bruce returned with three Geʽez copies; these underlay Richard Laurence’s 1821 editio princeps translation, reintroducing 1 Enoch to the West after more than a millennium.

Hessayon, ‘James Bruce and His Copies’; Boccaccini, JSP 27 (2018)

CONFIRMED

The giant tradition was transmitted onward through Manichaeism: the Manichaean Book of Giants, with fragments recovered at Turfan (western China), adapts the Qumran giants.

Sogdian and other Turfan fragments preserve figures like Sāhm/Ohya, descending from Ohyah in the Qumran Book of Giants — a geographically vast reception of the Enochic myth into late antiquity.

Goff, Stuckenbruck & Morano, Ancient Tales of Giants (2016)

INTERPRETIVE

A modern evangelical subculture (Chuck Missler’s “Return of the Nephilim,” L. A. Marzulli) reads Matthew 24:37 as predicting an end-times return of angel-human hybrids and equates UFOs with the Nephilim.

This is a devotional/eschatological framework, not a scholarly finding; it selectively fuses 1 Enoch, Genesis 6, and modern UFO lore.

Missler, Return of the Nephilim; academic surveys

DISPUTED

The transhumanism/UFO “demonic-hybrid” thesis — that the Nephilim’s spirits became demons now recurring via abductions and gene-editing — is a defensible reading of the text.

The demon-from-dead-giants idea has ancient roots (1 Enoch 15-16), but extending it to modern UFOs and transhumanism has no textual or historical support and is rejected by mainstream scholars.

Part II · What archaeology actually supports

The real cities, stones, bones, and weapons — genuinely tall people, giant megaliths, oversized ceremonial arms, and the true ceiling on human height.

Og of Bashan's “iron bed” & the real megaliths of the giants

Here is where the ground gets genuinely impressive. Deuteronomy points to Og's ~13-foot iron “bed” as a relic; and Bashan really is one of the densest megalithic landscapes in the Near East — thousands of dolmens and a giant stone wheel literally named for the Rephaim.

CONFIRMED

Deut 3:11 says Og alone remained of the Rephaim, and his “iron bed” was 9×4 cubits (~13.5×6 ft), still shown at Rabbah of the Ammonites.

The verse frames it as a relic on display (“is it not in Rabbah?”) — an editorial aside about a curiosity, not a measurement of Og's body.

Deuteronomy 3:11 (MT)

DISPUTED

The “iron bed” (eres barzel) may be a basalt sarcophagus or a megalithic monument, not a literal bed.

Many scholars prefer “sarcophagus”; a black basalt coffin of these proportions would fit a king's burial and explain why it was a shown monument. But the verse locates it at Rabbath-Ammon, where there is no basalt — so the specific verse-to-dolmen link is evocative, not demonstrated.

BAS Library, ‘King Og's Iron Bed’; Veijola (Brill)

INTERPRETIVE

The “iron” likely evokes black, iron-rich basalt — but the viral claim that “basalt is ~80% iron ore” is a chemistry error.

Bashan's plateau is dark volcanic basalt; the stone is iron-rich and black but only ~8–12% iron oxide, not iron ore. The imagery is plausible; the “80% iron” factoid is false.

Og's giant size is dynastic/legendary exaggeration, not anatomy.

An oversized royal bed/tomb served ostentation; ANE kings routinely inflated their stature. No skeletal evidence of a ~13-foot human exists anywhere.

CONFIRMED

Rujm el-Hiri / Gilgal Refaim is a real, massive Bronze Age megalith in the Golan.

Concentric basalt rings ~160 m across, an estimated 37,500–40,000 tons and 42,000+ stones, ~25,000 work-days of labor; dated to the Early Bronze Age (~3000–2700 BC).

Wikipedia, ‘Rujm el-Hiri’

DISPUTED

Rujm el-Hiri was NOT a precise astronomical observatory.

A 2024–25 study showed ~150 million years of tectonic rotation shifted the walls, so present alignments can't reflect original sightlines; the observatory claim is refuted. Burial/ritual and territorial functions fit better.

Archaeology Magazine (2025)

CONFIRMED

Thousands of megalithic dolmens fill the Golan/Bashan — a genuinely monumental prehistoric landscape.

Surveys report 6,500+ dolmens in the Golan alone, some capstones up to ~50 tons, dated mainly to the Intermediate Bronze Age (~2300–2000 BC). The Hebrew name Gilgal Refaim ties the wheel to the “Rephaim” — a later folk label, not proof giants built it.

LEGEND

There is direct archaeological evidence of Og himself, or of a giant race.

None. No inscription names Og and no oversized human remains exist. The megaliths predate the biblical narrative by well over a millennium and were built by ordinary Bronze-Age communities.

Goliath & the archaeology of Gath — a real city, a real name

Goliath's hometown has been dug for nearly 30 years, and it delivers: a huge Philistine city, a violent destruction that matches Kings, and an inscription with “Goliath”-type names from exactly the right era. What it can't deliver is the 9-foot man.

CONFIRMED

Tell es-Safi is biblical Gath — the largest Philistine city and Goliath's stated hometown.

Excavated since 1996 by Aren Maeir (Bar-Ilan), it is identified by near-unanimous consensus as Gath, the largest city of the southern Levant in the 10th–9th c. BC.

Tell es-Safi/Gath Project; Wikipedia ‘Gath’

CONFIRMED

The 2005 “Goliath ostracon” bears two names etymologically similar to “Goliath” (ʾLWT / WLT).

A sherd from below the late-9th-c. destruction (Iron IIA, c. 950–900 BC) carries two non-Semitic names in Proto-Canaanite script, comparable to the name behind Golyat (plausibly Anatolian/Lydian, cf. Alyattes). It is the earliest deciphered alphabetic inscription from a Philistine site.

Maeir et al., BASOR (2008)

INTERPRETIVE

The ostracon does NOT prove the biblical Goliath existed.

It shows only that Goliath-type names circulated at Gath around David's traditional era; it names no individual. Maeir himself cautions it is not proof of the man — it supports the plausibility of the setting.

Aren Maeir (project blog)

CONFIRMED

Gath was violently destroyed c. 830 BC — matching 2 Kings 12:17's note that Hazael of Aram captured it.

A site-wide destruction layer (fired mudbrick, collapse, ash), dated by pottery and radiocarbon to the late 9th c. BC, correlates with Hazael's campaign; a ~30-foot breach found in 2021 likely marks where the Arameans broke through.

BAS, ‘The Destruction of Philistine Gath’

CONFIRMED

Gath preserves the world's earliest known archaeological siege system.

A man-made siege trench, berm, and earthworks encircle the tell — the earliest siege system yet documented on the ground.

Bar-Ilan University; National Geographic Education

CONFIRMED

The Philistines were migrants of Aegean origin — confirmed by material culture and ancient DNA.

A 2019 aDNA study of Ashkelon burials found a European/Aegean genetic signal appearing in the early Iron Age and diluting within a few generations; pottery, architecture and diet match.

Feldman et al., Science Advances (2019)

PLAUSIBLE

A ~6'9' Philistine champion is entirely plausible; the ~9'9' version is best read as later heroic exaggeration.

The shorter textual height (~2.06 m, from LXX/4QSam-a) is tall but well within the human range for an elite champion. The taller Masoretic figure (~2.97 m) exceeds the tallest medically documented humans.

Real oversized skeletons — how tall a human body actually gets

Genuine paleopathology HAS found unusually tall ancient individuals — the real thing, dug up and diagnosed. But every verified case is pituitary gigantism topping out near ~8–9 feet, the biological ceiling. There is no verified 10–15-foot human, anywhere.

CONFIRMED

The “Roman Giant” of Fidenae (~202 cm, 3rd c. AD) is the first fully-excavated ancient skeleton with a confident gigantism diagnosis.

Excavated near Rome in 1991; ~202 cm vs a ~167 cm male average, with pituitary-fossa damage consistent with a growth-hormone-secreting tumor and death at 16–20.

Minozzi et al., J. Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (2012)

PLAUSIBLE

A Third-Dynasty Egyptian skeleton (~1.99 m, ~2700 BC), possibly king Sa-Nakht, is the oldest probable case of gigantism.

Reanalysis of remains found in 1901 shows “exuberant” long-bone growth at 1.987 m vs a ~1.7 m average. Identity as Sa-Nakht is inferred from tomb context, not proven.

Habicht, Rühli et al., Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology (2017)

CONFIRMED

Robert Wadlow (8'11' / 2.72 m) is the biological ceiling for verified human height.

Caused by pituitary hypertrophy; his growth plates never fused so he grew until death at 22. Guinness calls him the tallest man “of whom there is irrefutable evidence.”

Guinness World Records

CONFIRMED

Osteologists distinguish gigantism from acromegaly by whether overgrowth began before or after growth-plate fusion.

Gigantism (childhood onset) = tall stature with proportional long-bone lengthening; acromegaly (adult onset) enlarges the jaw, brow, hands and feet and thickens bone WITHOUT adding height.

Frontiers in Endocrinology (2022); clinical literature

CONFIRMED

Ancient stature is reconstructed by long-bone regression (Trotter–Gleser) or Fully's anatomical method — not eyeballed from bone size.

Stature = a×(bone length)+b, with coefficients specific to bone, sex and population; the femur gives the best single-bone estimate. This is how “giant” claims get tested — and fail.

Mays, Am. J. Physical Anthropology (2016)

DISPUTED

The “Giant of Castelnau” (claimed ~11'6', 1890) is not a verified giant human.

Three oversized bone fragments described by Vacher de Lapouge from tumulus fill; no modern peer-reviewed study exists and the bones are effectively lost, so size and even human identity are unauthenticated.

Vacher de Lapouge, La Nature (1890)

HOAX

American reports of 7–20-foot “giant skeletons” are hoaxes and misidentifications.

Smithsonian curator Aleš Hrdlička debunked them in 1934, attributing the reports to the “will to believe” and to amateurs misreading anatomy or extinct megafauna. No verified skeleton exceeds ~9 feet.

Massive spearheads & giant swords — the real oversized weapons

You asked about massive spearheads — and genuinely giant weapons DO exist in museums. The honest catch: nearly all are ceremonial, votive, or showpiece objects, not battle gear. And Goliath's famous ~15-lb spearhead sits right at the edge of possibility.

PLAUSIBLE

Goliath's spearhead weighed 600 shekels of iron (~7 kg / 15 lb), and the shaft was “like a weaver's beam” (1 Sam 17:7).

600 shekels ≈ 6.8–7.6 kg — about a modern sledgehammer head. “Weaver's beam” most likely stresses the shaft's unusual thickness. The figure is presented to emphasize Goliath's superhuman size and armament.

1 Sam 17:7; commentaries

DISPUTED

A 600-shekel iron spearhead is realistic as ordinary Iron-Age kit.

Real excavated Iron-Age spearheads are far smaller — the largest in one studied hoard was ~2.05 kg, roughly a quarter of Goliath's figure. A 7 kg head is at the extreme upper edge of possibility and reads as characterizing a giant, not a standard soldier.

CONFIRMED

The Norimitsu Ōdachi is a real 3.77 m (12.4 ft), 14.5 kg giant Japanese sword.

Forged 1447 by Osafune Norimitsu; housed at Kibitsu Shrine, Okayama. Scholars agree it was made as a votive shrine offering / demonstration of the smith's skill — NOT for combat; the “wielded by a giant” story is folklore.

Ancient Origins; Grunge

CONFIRMED

The Oxborough Dirk is a real oversized Bronze-Age ceremonial weapon.

70.9 cm, 2.36 kg, c. 1450–1300 BC, one of only ~5 such large dirks in NW Europe — never sharpened, no rivet holes for a handle: clearly a votive object, not a usable dagger.

Wikipedia, ‘Oxborough Dirk’; British Museum

CONFIRMED

The Rudham Dirk is a genuine giant Bronze-Age dagger — used as a doorstop before identification.

~68 cm, about three times normal size, ~3,500 years old, blunt and unsharpened, found deliberately bent in half as a ritual “killing” of the object.

Museum Crush; NHMF

CONFIRMED

The biggest ancient spearheads were the ceremonial ones — deposited as votive offerings in rivers and bogs.

The largest spearheads are impractically large, often decorated or barbed, and commonly deposited in water as religious offerings; practical war spears (Greek dory, Roman pilum) were much smaller and lighter.

Ancient Origins; Balkan Celts

DISPUTED

A single record-holding “giant excavated spearhead” of extreme size is documented.

No specific record-breaking giant Iron-Age spearhead is attested in mainstream sources; the real oversized examples are the ceremonial dirks and ōdachi, not spearheads. Claims of a uniquely enormous excavated spearhead are unsupported.

How tall did people really get? The genuinely tall

Real osteology gives an unsensational picture: Ice-Age Gravettians were taller than the farmers who followed; agriculture shrank people; and genuinely tall living peoples (the Nilotic Dinka, the Dutch) reach averages up to ~1.85 m. Individuals top out ~2.0–2.1 m without pathology — right where Goliath’s older textual height sits.

CONFIRMED

Upper Paleolithic Gravettian/Cro-Magnon Europeans were relatively tall and robust, with exceptional males reaching ~1.85-1.95 m.

Average Cro-Magnon male stature is placed ~1.66-1.79 m — taller than later Neolithic farmers — and outliers like Barma Grande 2 and Grotte-des-Enfants 4 reach ~1.85-1.95 m on their long femora. (Regression equations built on modern samples add uncertainty.)

ScienceDirect, ‘Describing Cro-Magnon’ (2022)

CONFIRMED

Human stature DECLINED with the adoption of agriculture (~2-5 cm on average), then stayed broadly stagnant for millennia.

Bioarchaeology finds Neolithic individuals shorter than pre-Neolithic groups, driven by monotonous single-crop diets, seasonal hunger, and denser disease environments; a 2022 PNAS study adds a partly-genetic nuance but the directional decline holds.

Mummert et al. (2011); Marciniak et al., PNAS (2022)

CONFIRMED

Anthropometric history (Steckel, Baten) shows European stature largely stagnant across the last two millennia, with no steady rise before ~1800.

Baten’s estimates find heights stagnant even between 1000 and 1800 despite rising incomes, with stature tracking animal-protein availability and disease more than GDP.

Koepke & Baten; eh.net ‘Historical Anthropometrics’

CONFIRMED

Nilotic peoples (Dinka, Nuer) are among the tallest documented populations — mid-20th-century Dinka men averaged ~181-183 cm.

Roberts & Bainbridge (1953-54) recorded ~182.6 cm (Dinka Agaar) and 181.3 cm (Ruweng); the tall long-limbed body plan aids heat dissipation. Recent lower figures reflect malnutrition and conflict, not genetics.

Roberts & Bainbridge (1963)

CONFIRMED

The Netherlands is the tallest modern nation (~184 cm men), after an ~18-20 cm secular gain since ~1810.

Dutch male height rose from ~166 cm around 1810 to ~184 cm today — high dairy intake, low inequality, universal healthcare — and has recently plateaued.

The Conversation (2024); NCD-RisC / conscript data

DISPUTED

Goliath was ~2.06 m (the older LXX/Dead Sea Scroll “four cubits and a span”), not ~2.9 m — a tall man, not a mythical giant.

The Masoretic “six cubits and a span” (~2.9-3.0 m) exceeds the tallest medically documented humans; the shorter reading of the older witnesses (4QSam-a, LXX, Josephus) is a biologically possible ~6’9’. “Giant” impressions usually arise from population height gaps.

Accordance / Crossway on 1 Sam 17:4

CONFIRMED

The honest ceiling: healthy populations average up to ~1.85 m and non-pathological individuals reach ~2.0-2.1 m; heights well beyond that reflect pituitary gigantism/acromegaly.

No healthy population averages much above ~1.85 m; individuals to ~2.0-2.1 m occur without pathology; cases far beyond (Wadlow 2.72 m) are all documented endocrine disease with shortened life expectancy.

Giant tools & colossal artifacts — real, but not giants' gear

Beyond weapons, genuinely oversized objects exist — giant Stone-Age handaxes, 100-ton sacred sarcophagi, 700-ton statues. Mainstream archaeology reads them as signals of ritual, status and skill; none is interpreted as scaled to a giant user.

CONFIRMED

Genuinely giant Acheulean handaxes exist — bifaces far larger than the ~12-15 cm working norm, e.g. the Furze Platt handaxe (~30-32 cm, ~2.8 kg).

Made by Acheulean toolmakers c. 300,000-400,000 years ago, roughly twice the size of ordinary handaxes; one of the largest Palaeolithic tools known from Britain (Natural History Museum, London).

Natural History Museum; Lithics 40 (Dale)

CONFIRMED

Giant handaxes are a recurring British phenomenon, not flukes — the Cuxton ficron (296 mm) and two giant handaxes at Frindsbury, Kent (published 2023, ~300,000 years old).

Studies note giant handaxes tend to show higher symmetry and extravagant “ficron” forms; the Frindsbury find is among the longest in Britain.

Antiquity, ‘Big enough to matter’; Ingrey et al., Internet Archaeology 61 (2023)

DISPUTED

Giant handaxes exceed the size for effective one-handed use, implying a non-utilitarian (display/symbolic) purpose.

Ergonomic studies identify a threshold beyond which a biface needs a two-handed grip, undermining routine butchery. But “impractical” is inferred, not proven — some argue large tools still did heavy work.

Cambridge Archaeological Journal (2025)

DISPUTED

Kohn & Mithen’s “sexy handaxe” theory — that oversized symmetrical handaxes were sexually-selected fitness displays.

Widely cited but heavily criticized; rebuttals argue the pattern fits collaborative reputation-building or flaking mechanics better than mate choice. An unproven hypothesis, one of several “display” readings.

Kohn & Mithen (1999); Nowell & Chang rebuttal

CONFIRMED

The Serapeum of Saqqara holds ~70-100-ton single-block granite sarcophagi — made for sacred Apis bulls, not giant humans.

The 24 monolithic sarcophagi (cut from Aswan granite ~900 km away) housed mummified Apis bulls; their scale reflects cult prestige and Egyptian quarrying capability, not the size of any occupant.

Arkeonews; Mariette excavation record

DEBUNKED

The “Colossi of Memnon” are giants — in reality two ~14 m (700-ton) statues of Amenhotep III, renamed by Greek visitors.

Greeks linked them to the Trojan hero Memnon because Amenhotep’s prenomen sounded like “Memnon”; after a 27 BC earthquake the north statue “sang” at dawn. A documented mythological misattribution of colossal royal statuary.

World History Encyclopedia; ISAC (Univ. of Chicago)

LEGEND

Og’s nine-cubit iron “bed” (Deut 3:11) proves a giant existed.

Scholars read the displayed object as a basalt sarcophagus or megalithic monument — a war-trophy boast of scale, not a fitted body measurement. A bed sized to its user is not how such trophies worked.

Biblical Archaeology Society, ‘King Og’s Iron Bed’

CONFIRMED

The general principle: oversized tools, vessels, statues and sarcophagi signal ritual, votive dedication, status and craft skill — not scaled-up giant users.

Across cases — giant handaxes, Serapeum sarcophagi, colossal statuary — outsized objects correlate with symbolic investment (extra labor, rare materials, exaggerated symmetry, public visibility). No mainstream find reads an oversized artifact as proportioned to a giant body.

Part III · What is hoax, myth, or misread

The frauds and photoshops, the misidentified Ice-Age fossils behind the legends, and the hard science of why a 12-foot human can’t exist.

The giant-skeleton hoaxes & the “Smithsonian cover-up”

Almost everything you've seen online about giant skeletons traces to a short chain of documented frauds — a carved gypsum statue, a 2002 Photoshop contest, and a satire website. Ironically, the Smithsonian was the great DEBUNKER of giants, not their concealer.

HOAX

The Cardiff Giant (1869) — a “petrified 10-foot man” — was a carved gypsum statue.

George Hull had it quarried in Iowa, carved in Chicago, and buried on a New York farm a year before it was “found.” Yale's O.C. Marsh called it “a most decided humbug” — fresh chisel marks can't survive centuries underground; Hull confessed. He built it to mock a preacher who insisted Genesis 6 giants were literal.

FABRICATED

Photos of archaeologists excavating enormous skeletons (Saudi Arabia, India, etc.) are Photoshop.

They originate in Worth1000.com's 2002 “Archaeological Anomalies” photo-manipulation contest; the best-known image was made by an artist (“IronKite”) in ~90 minutes and won third place. By 2004 it was recaptioned as a real dig; National Geographic traced and debunked it in 2007.

National Geographic News (2007); Museum of Hoaxes

FABRICATED

“The Smithsonian destroyed thousands of giant skeletons to hide them.”

The claim comes from a Dec 2014 article on World News Daily Report — a site whose own disclaimer says its content is fiction/satire. Snopes, PolitiFact, Reuters and the Smithsonian confirm it is false.

Snopes; PolitiFact

FABRICATED

A “2014 Supreme Court ruling” forced the Smithsonian to declassify a giant-skeleton cover-up.

No such case exists; a decision of that magnitude would be public record. The plaintiff “American Institution of Alternative Archaeology” is also invented.

Check Your Fact (2019)

MYTH

19th-century American newspapers “documented” real giant skeletons in burial mounds.

These reports were fueled by the racist “Mound Builder” myth — that a vanished superior race, not Native ancestors, built the earthworks. The Smithsonian's own Bureau of Ethnology (Cyrus Thomas, 1894) disproved it, establishing Native Americans as the builders.

Cyrus Thomas, Report on the Mound Explorations (1894)

DEBUNKED

The absence of giant skeletons “proves” a cover-up.

The argument is circular: it assumes the old reports are true, then treats the lack of remains as evidence of suppression. The Smithsonian's documented role was to DEBUNK giants — which the conspiracy inverts into a motive to hide them.

Jason Colavito

MYTH

Giant-skeleton beliefs persist because the evidence is genuinely ambiguous.

They persist for psychological reasons — they flatter a desire to confirm sacred narratives, exploit distrust of institutions (“what are they hiding?”), and spread as shareable images and satire mistaken for news. Hrdlička named the driver in 1934: “the will to believe.”

Smithsonian Magazine; Colavito

Misread fossils — why ancient people really did dig up “giants”

The best scholarly explanation for millennia of giant-bone discoveries is also the most satisfying: ancient people were finding real, enormous bones — of Ice-Age mammoths, mastodons, and cave bears — and reasonably reading them as the remains of giants and heroes.

FOSSIL-MISID

Greeks and Romans interpreted huge fossil megafauna bones as the remains of giants, heroes, and monsters — and collected and displayed them.

Adrienne Mayor documents a whole proto-paleontology: mastodon and mammoth bones dug up across the Mediterranean, displayed in temples, and read as proof that the heroes of the mythic past towered over living men.

Adrienne Mayor, The First Fossil Hunters (Princeton, 2000)

FOSSIL-MISID

The venerated “bones of Ajax, Orestes, and Theseus” were oversized fossil remains.

Herodotus describes the recovery of Orestes' “seven-cubit” bones; Plutarch, Theseus' bones brought to Athens. Mayor argues these were fossilized Pleistocene megafauna — civic and religious talismans whose scale “confirmed” heroic gigantism.

Mayor (2000); Herodotus 1.67–68; Plutarch, Theseus

FOSSIL-MISID

The one-eyed Cyclops was plausibly inspired by elephant/mammoth skulls with a large central nasal opening mistaken for a single eye.

A proboscidean skull's eye sockets are small and lateral, but the huge central nasal cavity looks like one giant central eye — and pre-Alexander Greeks had never seen a living elephant. (Mayor flags this as a plausible hypothesis, correcting older overreach.)

Mayor (2000)

DEBUNKED

The Lovelock Cave “red-haired giants” (Si-Te-Cah) were a race of giants.

The Paiute legend is genuine folklore, but excavation found Lovelock-culture artifacts and normal-sized human remains; one skeleton measured ~1.83 m (6 ft), and some “giant” bones proved to be cow bones.

Wikipedia ‘Lovelock Cave’; Feder

DEBUNKED

The “red hair” proves a distinct red-haired people.

Hair pigment is chemically unstable after death; heat, soil and time oxidize dark hair to rusty red. The colour is a post-mortem (taphonomic) artifact seen in many ancient mummies.

Skeptoid; Mayor

LEGEND

Patagonia was home to a race of 10–12-foot giants (the “Patagones”) met by Magellan's crew in 1520.

The people were the Tehuelche — genuinely tall (~180 cm) but human; Europeans then averaged ~155–165 cm, so they looked giant, and bulky fur clothing exaggerated it. The “12-foot” figures are progressive tale-inflation.

Wikipedia ‘Patagons’; Pigafetta

DEBUNKED

7–8-foot giant skeletons were excavated near Cuenca, Ecuador, proving South American giants.

Circulated on fringe sites (c. 2013–15) but never published, verified, or supported by released measurements/photos. Colavito documented the lack of evidence; historic Andean “giant bone” reports match the megafauna-fossil pattern.

Jason Colavito

FOLKLORE

Features like the Giant's Causeway are the work or remains of giants.

The Giant's Causeway is ~40,000 basalt columns from cooling lava; “Finn MacCool built it” is beloved folklore layered over geology — the broad European habit of attributing dramatic landscapes to giants.

Giant apes & the hard limit on human size

There really was a giant primate — Gigantopithecus, the largest ape that ever lived. But it wasn't human, and it's the closest nature got. The square-cube law makes a 12–15-foot human physically impossible: the bones would shatter under their own weight.

CONFIRMED

Gigantopithecus blacki was the largest ape/primate that ever lived — ~3 m standing, ~200–300 kg.

Universally described as the largest primate ever, known from ~2,000 teeth and four jawbones; body size is scaled from those relative to living great apes.

Zhang et al., Nature (2024); Ciochon research

CONFIRMED

But Gigantopithecus was an ape (an orangutan relative), NOT a human, hominin, or ancestor.

It is a pongine — a quadrupedal forest ape that left no descendants in the human line. A real giant, but not a giant human.

Nature (2024); Smithsonian Human Origins

CONFIRMED

A 2024 Nature study dated its extinction to 295,000–215,000 years ago — a dietary specialist that failed to adapt.

The team studied 22 cave sites with six dating techniques (157 radiometric ages); the related orangutan Pongo weidenreichi survived while Gigantopithecus did not.

Zhang et al., Nature 625 (2024)

CONFIRMED

“Meganthropus,” large Java jaws once called a giant human, is a non-hominin ape.

A 2019 micro-CT / enamel study found the teeth belong neither to Homo erectus nor orangutans, supporting Meganthropus as a non-hominin hominid ape — with no ancestry to modern humans.

Zanolli et al., Nature Ecology & Evolution (2019)

CONFIRMED

The actual robust hominins (Paranthropus) were small — despite massive jaws.

Paranthropus boisei males averaged ~137 cm and ~50 kg; the “robustness” was in skull and chewing muscles for tough plants, not overall stature.

Smithsonian Human Origins; Australian Museum

CONFIRMED

The square-cube law makes a scaled-up giant human biomechanically impossible.

Bone/muscle strength scales with area (~L²) while mass scales with volume (~L³): scaling a human 10× taller multiplies weight ~1000× but strength only ~100×, so bone stress rises ~10×. Haldane noted human thigh bones break at ~10× body weight — a giant would snap its femurs with every step.

J.B.S. Haldane, On Being the Right Size (1928); McNeill Alexander

CONFIRMED

A giant human would also suffer cardiovascular and heat-regulation collapse.

Heat production scales with volume (~L³) but skin dissipation with area (~L²), so a giant overheats; the heart can't pump blood up a vastly taller column. These constraints set upper size limits across the animal kingdom.

Haldane (1928); biomechanics literature

CONFIRMED

No hominin fossil supports 10–15-foot humans; the real ceiling is ~2.7 m via pituitary pathology.

Every documented extreme height (Wadlow 2.72 m; proportionate giants ~2.36 m) sits under ~2.8 m and comes with severe skeletal problems. Population height series from cemeteries never approach folklore figures.

Baalbek & the “giants built the megaliths” claim

Baalbek holds the largest cut stones ever moved — the ~800-ton Trilithon and quarry blocks up to ~1,650 tons. They are genuine and astonishing, and they are Roman-era human engineering. “Only giants or a lost civilization could move them” is contradicted by the site’s own dating and refuted by experiment.

CONFIRMED

The Baalbek Trilithon is three limestone blocks of ~750-800 tonnes each, ~19 m long, in the Temple of Jupiter podium, fitted so tightly a knife won’t pass.

Each block is ~19 m long, 4.2-4.3 m high, 3.6 m thick; they form the western podium wall of the Roman Temple of Jupiter Heliopolitanus.

Wikipedia, Baalbek Stones / Temple of Jupiter

CONFIRMED

The “Stone of the Pregnant Woman” (~1,000 t) still lies in the quarry ~800 m away; a ~1,650-tonne block — the largest ancient cut stone known — was found there in 2014.

The German Archaeological Institute’s 2014 dig uncovered the ~1,650-t block with smoothed faces, prepared for transport; the abandoned Hajjar al-Hibla shows tool marks of a working quarry.

Heritage Daily; DAI Baalbek reports (2014)

CONFIRMED

Baalbek is Roman construction (1st c. BC-1st c. AD), not pre-Roman.

All excavated evidence — Roman architecture, building sequence, epigraphy and dating — points to Roman origins; the sanctuary was built over ~two centuries beginning under Augustus. No material evidence of an earlier megalithic builder.

Wikipedia, Temple of Jupiter (Baalbek)

CONFIRMED

The quarry is slightly UPHILL of the temple, so the giant blocks were moved downhill on rollers/sledges/ramps by crews using levers and capstan winches.

The quarry lies ~800-900 m away and ~10-15 m higher than the temple platform; transport ran downhill (engineer Jean-Pierre Adam’s reconstruction) — labor-intensive but well within Roman capability.

Jean-Pierre Adam, ‘À propos du trilithon de Baalbek’

DEBUNKED

Only giants/Nephilim or a lost Atlantean/pre-Roman civilization could have moved the Baalbek stones.

These claims contradict the site’s Roman architecture, tool marks and dating, and wrongly assume huge stones are beyond organized human labor. Nothing “giants or aliens” explains that Roman engineering does not explain better.

The genetics of height & the “Nephilim DNA” myth

Extreme height is a solved genetics problem, not a mystery — specific mutations cause growth-hormone tumors that push height to ~2.7 m, always with severe disease. Against that, the “Nephilim/alien DNA” claims (Paracas skulls, the Starchild skull) collapse under actual testing.

CONFIRMED

Hereditary gigantism is caused by loss-of-function AIP mutations producing growth-hormone-secreting pituitary tumors (familial isolated pituitary adenoma).

When the GH excess begins in childhood before the growth plates fuse, the result is gigantism; after fusion it is acromegaly. AIP carriers present younger with larger, more treatment-resistant tumors.

DNA from Byrne’s molar teeth identified c.910C>T (p.R304X); coalescence dated the shared founder to ~1,500 years ago — a genetic origin for the “Irish giant” folklore.

X-linked acrogigantism (X-LAG) is caused by Xq26.3 microduplications spanning GPR101, causing the earliest, most extreme infant-onset gigantism.

The duplication rewires enhancer contacts so GPR101 (a cAMP-raising orphan receptor) is massively over-expressed in the pituitary lesion.

Trivellin et al., NEJM 2014

CONFIRMED

Real pathological gigantism caps ~2.3-2.7 m and always brings severe disease and early death — there is no healthy “giant physiology.”

Byrne (~2.33 m) and Wadlow (2.72 m) both died at 22; GH/IGF-1 excess drives tumor mass effect, arthropathy, cardiomyopathy and diabetes. Height is a symptom of a lethal tumor, which is why ~2.7 m is a practical ceiling.

DEBUNKED

The Paracas “elongated skulls” (Peru) are normal Homo sapiens shaped by artificial cranial deformation (infant head-binding), not alien or Nephilim ancestry.

Binding an infant’s pliable skull between boards to mark elite status is among the best-documented Andean practices; the resulting shapes match the Paracas specimens, and the claimed “anomalies” fall within known human variation.

HOAX

Brien Foerster’s claim that Paracas skull DNA is “not human” is not credible science.

The 2014 “DNA results” were never peer-reviewed, were commissioned privately from an unnamed geneticist, and the lab acknowledged most samples were contaminated — the exact failure mode that voids aDNA claims. Real Andean aDNA shows ordinary Native American lineages.

DEBUNKED

The “Starchild skull” is a human child’s skull with fully human nuclear DNA, not a human-alien hybrid.

1999 testing recovered standard X and Y chromosomes (human, male) and 2003 mtDNA placed it in Native American haplogroup C; the morphology is congenital hydrocephalus. When results came back human, Pye moved the goalposts.

DEBUNKED

“Giant / Nephilim DNA” fails as a category: there is no giant genome, no provenanced remains, and the “anomalous” sequences trace to contamination and pseudoscience.

Every real case of extreme height maps to known human mutations (AIP, GPR101, and syndromic causes); no “Nephilim” specimen has verifiable provenance or replicated sequencing. The pattern — private commissioning, moving goalposts, media not journal release — is diagnostic of pseudoscience.

A field guide to the famous “giant skeleton” cases

The most-cited giant discoveries, one by one — and what each actually is. None supports a literal giant human. They sort into deliberate fakes, undocumented modern legends, press-inflated ordinary digs, and real objects (a temple, a mountain, granite) that are not giant anatomy.

MYTH

Lovelock Cave / Si-Te-Cah “red-haired giants” (Nevada) — supposed cannibal giants sealed in a cave, their red-haired bones recovered.

Real cave and real Paiute artifacts (excavated 1911-24), but no giant skeletons were ever documented; dark hair oxidizes rusty-red after death, and the outsized bones were misread animal remains.

Brian Dunning; NevadaGram

HOAX

The Catalina Island giants — Ralph Glidden claimed a lost race of blond giants 7-9 ft tall from ~4,000 graves in the 1920s.

Glidden was a grave-robbing showman who invented the “giant” story to draw paying visitors after losing his funding; remains later examined at the LA County Natural History Museum proved to be of ordinary stature.

OurSouthBay; Santa Maria Times

MYTH

The 1912 Lake Delavan (Wisconsin) mound “giant skeletons” — an oft-cited New York Times item on 18 large skeletons.

The three-paragraph story was secondhand with no measurements; the actual excavation correspondence of Charles E. Brown never mentions unusually large bones. Real effigy mounds, press exaggeration, no giants.

Wisconsin Watch (2023); Fake Archaeology Wiki

FABRICATED

The “Giant of Kandahar” — US special forces allegedly killed a 12-13 ft red-haired, six-fingered giant in an Afghan cave.

A modern internet/radio legend with zero evidence, popularized by Steve Quayle and L. A. Marzulli; the Department of Defense has no record of any such incident, and no bodies, photos, or documentation exist.

HOAX

The Cardiff Giant (1869) — a 10-ft “petrified man” hailed as a biblical giant.

Carved gypsum, quarried in Iowa, carved in Chicago and buried on a New York farm by George Hull to mock a literal reading of Genesis 6; O.C. Marsh called it “a most decided humbug.” The archetypal giant hoax.

CONFIRMED

The Ain Dara temple “giant footprints” (Syria) are REAL — but deliberate Iron-Age cultic sculpture, not anatomy.

In this c. 1300-740 BCE Syro-Hittite temple, the ~1 m footprints carved into the threshold and portico depict a deity (possibly Ishtar) symbolically striding into the shrine — sacred art at monumental scale. (The temple was destroyed by an airstrike in 2018.)

Ancient Origins; Biblical Archaeology Society

FOSSIL-MISID

The Mpuluzi “God’s footprint” (South Africa) — a ~1.2 m footprint-shaped hollow in granite, promoted as a giant’s 200-million-year-old footprint.

Self-refuting: the ~3.1-billion-year-old Mpuluzi granite crystallized kilometers underground, so nothing could have “stepped” in it; the shape is erosional weathering of the rock’s mixed crystal texture.

CONFIRMED

The “giant footprint” of Adam’s Peak (Sri Lanka) — a large footprint near the summit revered as a giant divine figure’s.

A real ~1.8 m rock relief on the sacred peak, venerated simultaneously as the print of the Buddha, Shiva, Adam, or St. Thomas by four faiths — a genuine devotional site, but a natural/enshrined rock feature, not evidence of a giant.

The honest bottom line

So what would you actually find if you went digging? Real things: the tell of Gath where a Philistine champion named Goliath-something really could have stood ~6'9' (the oldest manuscripts' height, not the inflated ~9'9' of the later Masoretic Text); the thousands of basalt dolmens and the great stone wheel of the Rephaim in Bashan; the biggest spearheads and swords ever made — but forged as votive offerings, not battle gear; and the bones of pituitary giants who reached ~8–9 feet and paid for it with crippled skeletons. What you would not find is a 12-foot human skeleton or a buried giant spearhead-of-the-giants, because the square-cube law forbids the first and no verified example of the second has ever survived examination. The giants are real — as one of humanity's oldest and most widely shared stories about a lost heroic age. That is a more interesting truth than a Photoshopped skeleton, and it has the advantage of being true.
